I love plus size tunic tops! I am not a fashionista in the purest sense. Don't get me wrong, I like to wear current styles and fun clothes. However,there are just some things in life that no matter what the style, I still find myself looking for when I shop. One of those items is woman's Tunics shirts to wear with leggings and jeans.

The Tunic top is a loose-fitting garment, that usually goes to the knees or top of your thigh. It is a great choice for women who want a comfortable, yet stylish outfit. The sleeveless tunic for the summer is a great piece to use as a cover-up over your swim suit. Another good choice would be a white cotton tunic, or for a little extra style, a beaded linen tunic. In the winter, a red or long black tunic top or tunic sweater can be paired with leggings and belted for an outfit that can go from day to evening. You can do this by adding dressy jewelry, a fancy belt and high heeled shoes. The long tunic set is a great office outfit. It isn't too casual and is easy to wear for those long days at the office.

The Tunic was common as a masculine garment of the greco-roman civilization. It was a piece of clothing that was worn by both men and women. Tunics went out of style around the mid 1900`s but by the early 20th century, saw a resurgence in popularity. From the ancient Greeks and Romans, through the medieval times, tunics represented a very comfortable garment that was simple in design and easy to make. It could be worn by anyone.

Types of Tunics for Women

Originally, there were two basic styles of tunics: peplos and chitons. These styles were generslly made of linen or silk. They were designed with two rectangular pieces of cloth partially sewn together on both sides. The opening at the top was folded down in the front and back much like a collar. A woman would pull it over her head and fasten it at her shoulders with two large pins, creating a sleeveless dress type garment. Then it was belted or tied.

Today, we see a variety of tunics in varying lengths and styles. Some tunics are called "kaftans" and go all the way to the floor. This tunic dress was very popular in the 1960's as a common item to be worn around the house. My grandma had several of these. I always thought she looked very chic in them. My favorite was a vintage tunic that was printed with paisleys in a burnt orange and green. It would go very well with my jeans! I also liked the printed tunics that had vertical stripes. Today you can find these in tunic shirts that look like long menswear. This can visually give you a longer, lean look. Even if it is a plus size tunic, the vertical stripes will create a slimming effect.


There are many varieties of tunic which are in fashion. Tunics are made in many different fabrics, colors, and adorned with a variety of decorations. The prints can be large flowers, animal prints, or polka dots...making a bold statement. Or they can be subtle stripes, small pin dots, or plain, single colored tunics. Embroidery, applique work, sequins, and fringe are also part of the design, especially in vintage tunics. And the fabric choices are varied too. In India, silk Tunics are popular. Here in the US, you will often see polyester, cotton, or linen. I personally am not a fan of linen due to the enormous amount of wrinkles I get when I wear it.

I am glad that Tunics have made a resurgence in popularity. Sometimes I think clothes are extremely impractical in their design. In my opinion tunics for women should never go out of style. It is like getting to wear you PJs all day while looking like you just stepped out of Vogue magazine. Long live theleggings plusTunic...May you never go out of style!
