women who rock 'n rule: the greatest female-fronted rock groups and bands
75
This is not a vanity hub, but a money hub. Yes, I think I need to actually start thinking of the money-side of HubPages. Besides, I've been dramatic, dark, poetic, sarcastic and yes hateful in my last hubs so this is like a breath of fresh air -- oh not for me but for you. And it might bring the money rolling in. Might.
This hub is inspired by The Lonely Hubber's piece on all-girl groups. But I took on a slightly different angle but still in the same category -- women in music. But be forewarned though that this hub is not content-rich. If you want more meat to chew on, click on the links provided with the images below. Honestly, I was more concerned with topping Constant Walker's layouting genius than anything. But I think I miserably failed for all I could come up with is the campiest looking hub ever! Would you give me props for that?
So anyway, below is a compendium of the greatest (at least for me) rock groups and bands fronted by a female. I hope you enjoy the list as I enjoyed making it. Hell yeah!

LOL MissJamie
True dat! This is something to keep me afloat for awhile - I may not bore myself being all dark and serious but I have to think of the "fans" (that felt like I'm a celebrity! LOL) Thanks for dropping by. I myself enjoyed your "sexy" hub :D
Okay, before I clicked in I thought, "Here's the ones I'd choose, and if he misses any of them, I'm telling him so. Let's see what he's got!" You done did good. Except...
Janis Joplin -Big Brother and the Holding Company
Darn! And I though I got everybody covered! How could i forget (**starts gouging eyes**). I will re-edit! I must reedit for the sake of Bobby Mcgee! Thanks!!!! :D
You've got some of my favorites here, for sure. I think Annie Lennox's (post Eurythmics) "Why" is stunning. "No Doubt," "10,000 Maniacs" rock too, of course they all rock. I had a guitar pick (shark fin) that Joan Jett gave to a stewardess friend with her name on it. I still have it, but I used it so much I wore her name off. Duh. Good one!
Hey Chris
That's cool! Fancy e-baying it? LOL So you're a musician, too. I should've know, I mean is there anything you are not?! (i've just been to your latest hub) Thanks for dropping by :D
Cris - you'll never believe it - I had Dreams playing just now!!
Great list and what I love as much is the artistic way you put the whole thing together! Black and white juxtaposed with the lipstick and shoes - just soooo classy.
How did Christoph get that guitar pick? *wonders* ....thereby hangs another tale??
Hi Cris, just dropping by. I was looking for Janis Joplin and Suzie Q. Am I showing my age?
shalini
And I'm not surprised! A big fleetwood mac fan like you? I would fall off my chair if you were listening to hmmm Spice Girls! LOL
Yeah, I did spend much time on the layout than the text! For a change!
Now I could only imagine the circumstances surrounding Chris' guitar pick :D
Jewels
Of course not! Music transcends time so I wouldn't say that. I myself listen to 30s and 40s standards. Yeah, it seems I missed several great women as well. Maybe a part 2? Thanks for dropping by :D
Shalini: My friend the stewardess gave the Joan Jett guitar pick to me. That is all. No great story there.
Red lips and high heels...well!! Nice layout Chris! :P
I don't particularly enjoy many female voices but Fleetwood Mac rocks!
Enjoyed It Cris! Love Joan Jet, Heart, and ya, Janis Joplin would have been nice.
I think you did great with the layout, and you chose pretty pictures too, I was quite draw in. In fact... what's this hub about again? Laugh!
Great picks, Cris, I'll add one Spanish favorite that isn't widely known aound the world, but that... should be :-) Eva Amaral, voila!
Actually Cris, thanks to my daughter, I have listened to a lot of Spice Girls and the like too - each passing girl band, boy band :D
Christoph: whatever you say :D
Fabuloso list, great treatment. I love the "band history" quotes, too. when I saw Debbie Harry in #1 spot I fully expected Chrissie Hynde in #2 spot (simply because they are intertwined in my memory).
One that I would add is The Motels, lead singer Martha Davis. Songs include "Only the Lonely" "Suddenly Last Summer" and my fave, "Total Control" (amazing saxaphone solo).
Another thought. A song I associate with Joan Jett is "Cherry Bomb" but I think the more famous version is by The Runaways (don't know the lead singer tho).
Making me feel like a little headbanger over here. And that's a good thing! Thanks!! MM
Does Pat Benetar count or is she more of a solo artist?
Really liked this - a dramatic departure from your usual stuff - and it worked. Like somebody else above I was expecting Janis. The quotes that you found make for a great read and give you good links. I used to be a neighbour of Annie Lennox in Crouch End, London. She saw me once in the greengrocers but was restrained enough not to ask for my autograph.
Chris & Shalini
Okay, so no forthcoming hub about a guitar pick then.
Feline Prophet
Oh yes, Fleetwood does rock! So you mean you have no favorite female vocalists?
Randy B
Janis has been added! Cool picture, too. She seemed to be uhm happy about something! Your guess is as good as mine! LOL
Elena.
okay, okay, at least I got one good thing going - the layout! Maybe you should hub about Spanish entertainers, too! Think about it.
MM
This is in no particular order as it would be hard to rank these great female artists. Oh I know the Motels, too. Maybe I'll add them too! Actually Joan Jett was from The Runaways.
Pat Benatar is more known as a solo artist - but her songs do rock! I particularly like We Belong and Love is Battlefield.
Iphi
yeah, you can call this a breather which I so badly needed. Really?! It's good to note that she has manners where celebrities are concerned! LOL
:D :D :D :D :D
When I grow up I want to be like Annie Lennox.
Isn't she the coolest?! :D
She's been my hero since I saw her and Dave Stewart at the Free Mandela Concert, or was it Live Aid? Maybe Live Aid
Excellent photo of Janis! The perfect list!
Chris...I think Karen Carpenter was one of the greatest female singers ever...there...call me square if you dare! :P
-Cris, if you're waiting for money from Google, don't hold your breath. I've been here a year now, and have never seen one cent from them.
I think this is a great looking hub, dude! The B&W's are a nice touch. I really like everyone listed - especially the little Irish singer from Cranberries. I saw a video of her her doing "Ave Maria" with Luciano Pavarotti during a Cranberries concert. Awesome!
I would have also included the little-known, and very under-rated, Portishead singer, Beth Gibbons.
Great hub! 16 and 3/4 thumbs up!
Feline Prophet
I agree Karen Carpenter had one of the most distinct voices ever but I think the Carpenters are more of a duo than a group/band. :D
Constant
I'm not actually. It's just my way of distinguishing my more commercial hubs from my uhm more artistic pursuits. *wink*
Really? Would you say I topped your clean chic layout? LOL Yeah she has a nice little voice that's very distinct. It's not clean singing but there's something about her.
Yes I would have included Beth Gibbons too along with Edie Brickle of the New Bohemians and some of the other artists cited above by MM and the others but then again, I want to limit the count to just 13. Or I would have come up with the greatest 50 and that's just about everybody! LOL
Thanks for dropping by :D
Well you have me favorites in there; Joan Jet and Janis Joplin. I believe Janis would have been one of the greatest blues singers of her age if she didn't destroy herslef.
Pete
I couldn't agree more. Thanks for dropping by :D
GREAT CHOICES ! I agree with everyone of them, and as you know I'm a Radio guy, who actually is old enough to remember Janis when she was alive. Hope I don't start flashing back to Woodstock today :-)
Thanks Dan! Then let us efface old and say plainly that you're a Radio guy. And btw, that means, I really did make great choices! :D
Cris - Great list I love that women can rock!! I also like your dramatic and dark side as well. Keep em comin any way you want I will read them all!
TM
Of course women can rock! Hey, you yourself rock so... Okay, since you asked for it, I'll keep them coming! Thanks for dropping by :D
Hey Cris! I'm glad you liked my "sexy" hub. It's one of the very first romantic themes I've ever written. I'm not great at it yet but working on it:) As others have commented here, I like your writing no matter what it's about! Hugs
JamieD
Yeah it really is nice to practice variety in our writing if only to break the monotony and offer something different. And thanks for the support :D
cris-Good list and what I love as much is the way you put the whole thing together!Like the idea
Lgali
I'm at a loss for words. And all I can muster is a sincere appreciation of your comment. Thanks! :D
You got some my favorites in there although I never heard of garbage. I will put on Fleetwood Mac today since the jingle is in my head now (Thanks a lot :-). "chaaaaaannnge will keep us together...running for the shadows.."
Oh you probably have heard of Garbage and you just don't know it's them. They hit the bigtime in mid 90s. Fleetwood Mac's a classic! Turn up the volume and share the grrove! :D
Great list. I will add one of my favorites which is Pat Benetar!
Thanks! I was thinking too of Pat Benatar but I think she is more popularly known as a solo artist ... I think! LOL Thanks for dropping by. Glad you like this :D
For shame, for shame... Forgetting Janis Joplin! Actually I can see how it happened, since people barely remember BB&THC, only JJ as a solo act.
Oh, and I *do* love the high heels and lips. Very sassy classy!
You listed ALL of my favorites. ALL of them. I just knew I'd have at least one to add, but you covered every one of them, and you did it so well Cris. I think your layout is good, and the quotes were very cool to read. What I really like are the links to the band histories. It allows me to choose what history I want to read without having to work around it if I don't want to know. Very smart. Same with having links to the songs. It's visibly more pleasing to look at a picture rather than a video. Just my opinion, and I like the way you did this.
Great job!
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Heck I love all the artists you mentioned. my favourite has to be Blondie, got to stick with my sisters here
cris, the pain a guy has to go to , putting food on the table.
I can't argue against any of your choices, although one band I do like to listen to (and watch) is "The Corrs" . Three for the price of one, I ask you how good a bargain is that ? ( oh yeah there is a guy in there as well , have not got the faintest idea what he looks like ) ;-)
Jama
I know and I have knelt hours on salt to repent! I hope she'd forgive me wherever the joint she is right now!
Pam
Hey you! Glad you appreciate the links and the layout. I was actually worried more on the uploading time when the vids are actually posted instead of their links.
Just so you know. The rocker chick above has no wings, I made her an angel! Ha!
BP
and of course I'm not surprised!
Ag
Oh right The corrs - the singing Irish siblings. I'd have to make a mental note on that! As for your question, I'd go check my CD and see what he looks like.
Thanks all :D :D :D
Hell yeah!
These girls can rock as hell! I especially love Gwen Stefanie, Evanescence, and the Garbage bands! Damn! Feels like its been a long time back on here since my laptop crash?! Glad to see half of your face?! ROLF! You look like you're fresh out of high school. :D
Hell yeah back to you hey may!
Yep these girls can rock like your best homies! And be prepared for the avatar big reveal! LOL Thanks for dropping by :D
no problem, I hate having to miss out on all the great new hubs out here?! It stinks having to borrow someone elses laptop this time since mine crashed?!
Oh bear with it, life's one little flaw. btw, got your email. Just shot one back atcha! chekkit :D
Huh? Are you John or Jim? -_-You can tell I don't use the message center much?!
Oh okay, i'll forward it back to you so you can send it to the correct recipient :D
Hey Cris, this is a side of you that I have not seen before. I Love it! You have brought back many great memories for me. Now, I will go broke buying all these damn CDs. "Nice Hub."
Hey you back! I was kind of trying to break the monotony. Just for variety's sake. Glad you lurve it. I would never mind going broke, just as long as there is good music!
Btw, if it's you, "nice hub" would suit me just fine, anytime :D
It is actually sad that your list is so short. More women should start up bands and make the list as long as it would be if we were talking about men.
Dan
Yeah I agree with you it is a sad thing really but then again this just might be a reflection of the state of the music business. Thanks for dropping by :D
I visited this hub every night after work but didn't leave a comment immediately because I wanted to listen to the different rock bands first. The finest indeed! The singers are familiar. Of course, I'm not comparing these bands with our very own Filipino bands who also rock 'n rule, hahaha. Again, thanks for this gift of a hub. This can be a good hang-out on evenings and weekends for me aside from the symphonies and the works of Andres Segovia and the other classic masters.
Hey France
Sure hang out for a while. And next time you do, bring senor neruda along with you! :D
Good list.
You and I have very different tastes, though Blondie is definitely tops, and Joan Jett pwns! I feel any list of female acts must include Sleater-Kinney, as well as Yeah Yeah Yeahs (female-fronted). Le Tigre, The Gossip, and of course Siouxie and the Banshees must also be considered.
I keep thinking of more -- Veruca Salt, The Breeders. Maybe I'll have to write my own hub on this subject.
LOL apparently we do!
Yeah that sounds a great idea. It would be nice what other people think as far as this topic is concerned. Thanks for dropping by. And I would appreciate a note if you ever hubbed about your own list :D
I woulda thrown In Siouxsee from Siouxsee and the Banshees too . But Cris some absolutely excellent picks here .
hey Tony
Glad you like this little tribute. Yeah Siouxsee, too. Damn! Aren't we both 80s junkies, huh?! Maybe a sequel, and I throw in the Motels, the new bohemians, strawberry switchblade, propaganda and lots more! How's that? Thanks :D
Nice Cris, love the choices, the pics and the music! :)
Let me know if you ever figure out that "make money" part. lol!
Of course I will, I'm not one to be selfish with what little blessings I get! LOL Great to see you here, Tracker! :D
Looks like a HIT to me baby...I must admit Fleetwood Mac is one of my favs. and I actually saw Joan in person as well as attended Live Stock..hee hee... so now you know my age, but you know my age anyway... I love 'Dreams'...all of them...especially about my Mother...and I even have dreams about you..sssshhhh also had a couple glasses of wine tonight hic hic...:O) Hugs
G-Maaaaaaa!!!!! hahahaha! here's to more wine :D
Oh guess who's got 400 coming up!!!
G-MA
If I don't lurve you as much as I do, I'd yank that bottle away from your hand. But too late, I guess you got me bewitched, bothered bewildered and under your spell. Totally! I have an idea of how young you are but ladies, specially the great ones, are not to be asked of how many moons they have seen in their lifetime. So there.
Woodstock?! Hell yeah! You are a true blue flower child! Here's to the good old rockin crazy dazed and oh happy times! A bear hug this time! And a sip too! :D
Shalini
We got another Fleetwood Mac groupie who's come out in the open! Let's welcome her with hugs and MORE WINE!!!!
400? Oh that! No comment! LOL :D
You rock Cris. Wouldn't change a thing. Loved the quotes too. Just a beautiful layout dude. Glad ya added Janis too.
Hey C.!
Whatup ma friend?! Glad you like this as it is. Had to add Janis - or else, I have sinned a great sin! LOL Thanks for dropping by :D
Debbie Harry in her prime singing Denise in that red and white skirt, jeeez still brings me out in a sweat. Love Stevie Nicks though, she's just sex on legs, great hub moi friend.
Now you're talking! LOL Thanks for dropping by :D
great list cris, woulda wanted to see siouxie sioux of siouxie and the banshees but i guess she's pretty obsure and she's more new wave than rock hehehe...
Great list but I would have to include Paramore.
Buddy
Glad you like the list. And yes she's not as "mainstream" as the list but as far as greatness goes, I think I agree with you. Thanks for dropping by! :D
jbickham
Are the band who sung the theme for "Twilight". Let's see in a couple more years, okay? Anyway, thanks for dropping by :D
The only other one I could think of right off hand is Patty Smyth, remember Scandal? Warrior? Heck, she ALMOST became lead singer of Van Halen after David Lee Roth left. But anyway, really nice Hub, I love the layout!
You can really pick them! I love them all. Your layout is very smooth! I really like the lipstick and high heels...and the quotes! I found the quotes very cool.
I have to agree with your assessment...Shirley Mansen, Amy Lee, and Stevie Nicks rock! I can't think of another women that should be in the top list that you left out except...maybe Pat Benatar :)
sabreblade
Did she really?! Wow I din not know that! That's cool! Thanks for dropping by :D
kari
I laboured mostly on the "look" of this hub - to make up for the lack of content! LOL thanks, glad you liked it :D
Kea
I would love to add Pat Benatar, but she is more popularly known as a solo artist. But still, good choice! Thanks for dropping by :D
Well done. No Jack off Jill? They were totally risque and dark. =P G|M
P.S.
Here's a link to one of my favorite songs by them with lyrics..
I havent heard of them honestly. But as I like risque and dark, i think I just might check them out. Thanks for the link :D
Anytime, hope you like. Awesome band. They disbanded in 2001/02. The singer has a new band called scarling.
Oh that's too bad. Scarling, as in a little/baby scar? LOL or is it a homage to (Clarice) Starling for that hint of dark? :D
haha..its actually...
scarling.
With a period. They have a definition on their official site. ;)
Its a different sound..more like a gothy radiohead or something.
A goth-flavoured radiohead?! Now I am most curious! :D
Nice
yep deffiantly all great female bands great work
amjdbhatti - thanks, glad you liked it.
brad - thanks, glad you appreciate this one.
:D
Glad the conversation's still spinning (like an old LP) over here!
Here are a few more from MM's memory bank:
Devinvyls ("When I think about you I touch myself") Lead singer I believe used to be a porn start. Christina Amphlett
Xene Cervenka lead singer of punk band "X" with John Doe.
Aimee Mann, lead singer of Til Tuesday
Also for your consideration: Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson of the funnest band in pop history, the B52s!!!
MM
I salute your infinite knowledge about music! Aimee Mann - hush, hush, keep it down down voices carry!
i think I must definitely do a sequel now! Thanks again for dusting off those LPs and sharing here! :D
Great topic. Tons of reponses.
Pat Benatar. I've seen her concerts, met her. Absolutely a 10.
yeah I hear you about Pat Benatar! Thanks for dropping by B.J. :D
Cris,
I'm one of the biggest rock fans out there and I believe that you captured every single great female rock artist there ever was. I would have added only one, The great Dusty Springfield.
hglick
What was Dusty's band? And yes, you rock! Thanks for dropping by :D
Cris,
I missed the title, but Actually Dusty fronted 2 bands. A band called "The Springfields" started by her brother, and her comeback with "The Pet Shop Boys" and one of the greatest rock tunes (IMO anyway)
"What Have I Done To Deserve This"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1TSbCDyYBY
These were not great bands but neither was Janis Joplin's Band, "Big Brother and the Holding Company" and many of these artists were much bigger in solo careers (ex: Annie Lennox, Stevie Nicks)
On another note, excellent addition with Amy Lee. Many people would leave her out. She really rocks.
I absolutely love the song and video "Call Me When You're Sober"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEoP43Pv57k
hglick
I can tell that you really love this hub! Thanks, your input and views are highly appreciated. Yes, I remember Dusty teaming up with The Petshop Boys duing the 80s.
Thanks for dropping by again and providing the links above. :D
Wow!! I didn't know that about Dusty Springfield being in Petshop Boys (which I briefly confused with Cornershop). I knew she was gay, but I didn't know she resurfaced in the 1980s.
So much to learn here on HP!
MM
I think it was just a onetime collaboration but I'm not sure. :D
Yes Cris - But it was a repeated collaboration -
From The Pet Shop Boys on Wikipedia
"The continued success of "It's a Sin" was followed by the release of "What Have I Done to Deserve This?," on 10 August. Co-written with Allee Willis and also featuring Dusty Springfield on vocals, the single reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. Although the duo had wanted to release this track on their debut album already, they had been unable to track down Springfield and were reluctant to record it with any other female singer, despite their record company's suggestions. Springfield's manager finally contacted them in 1987, following the release of Please and towards the end of that year, she travelled to London to record "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" with them. It was the first track to be recorded for the duo's second album. Pet Shop Boys had been told that Springfield was "difficult" to work with and even that she could no longer sing; however, her performance on the track put any such concerns to rest and they began a collaboration with her, which lasted until the end of the decade. Included on their then forthcoming second album Actually, the song became a massive worldwide hit and resurrected Springfield's career, leading to her 1990 album, Reputation, on which Pet Shop Boys were major contributing producers. This duet was also the start of a series of collaborations with high profile musicians, going on throughout the band's career."
hey hg!
Thanks for the info you posted here, it's appreciated. And btw, you rock! :D
excellent hub, thaks for sharing this information and advice.
123312
Hye Cris, first off, I watch VH1 Classic quite a bit and whenever Blondie is on...I get a funny feeling in my pants.
Anyway, I would put the Bangles on this list. I like "Walk Lik an Egyption" and Susanna Hoffs is HOT...even today. Also Lita Ford did her share of ass kicking with "Kiss me Deadly & Don't Close Your Eyes."
A couple new bands you shoud check out that have ass kicking rockin chick singers are Slunt, Damone & Flyleaf!
astray
I hope you really intended in coming over here! LOL Glad you like it :D
Adam
Blondie - of course I know what you're talking about!
Thanks for sharing your opinion, I think I would do a sequel to this. As for the "rocin chick singers" I definitely would have to check them out. Thanks for dropping by man :D
another one for The Cardigans. :) makes me remember your hub with the 'love me, love me'.
but i think Garbage is cooler! haha
hey crinkle
yeah. i dont know why I love that Cardigans song, guess I'm a love fool, or a fool for love! But aren't we all? LOL :D
There's a whole new generation of female fronted rock bands rising around the globe. Tarja Ternunun, now solo from Nightwish, Christina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil, and June Maun of Clandestine, along with Bands like Epica, Delain, Octavia Sperati, and more. The Genre isn't in past tense at all. 'DeX'
True that, we've never seen the end of them. And that's some great news! Hell yeah! Thanks for dropping by, doc :D
super hub.
thanks!

Dude, I know what you mean about taking another angle with your hub content. I played the dark, sad role for awhile but it sure felt good to come up with something similar to what you chose here. I'm not going to promote my own hubs, just wanted to say this is an awesome hub, great choices in women singers, I think Heart would be my number one:)
