Sometimes I shave, sometimes I don't. My husband deals either way. If he has hair in his pits and on his legs, then how could he care if I do? Sometimes, I feel the need to shave the pits because, despite washing daily, I will get a rash if they are hairy and it is hot out. I have extremely sensitive skin.
I have always been a shaver and use deodorant. About 30 years ago I too found a very large lump under one of my arm pits. When this lump broke the inside was the same colour as my stick deodorant and almost the same consistancy. I stopped using deodorant and started using...don't laugh, apple cider vinegar. it works well and the smell of the ACV is gone in about a half minute. It keeps you fresh all day by killing the bacteria that causes odor.

I think the important thing is that you keep yourself clean, man or woman. It seems like a good idea for men to trim their underarm hair every so often, women too. I do not use deoderant and I only use soap every so often (once a week maybe) and I find my pit smell is okay. I think using these chemicals in your pits could pose an unnessary cnacer risk. I am of Native American/irish decent and I am naturally non hairy. I think if I had a different ethnic background and had a lot more hair I would try to tame it somehow. Iv'e tried to convince my wife not to shave under her arms and her pubic area. She went for four days, and let me do the shaving. Our sex life was never better. I think women who DO NOT shave their arm pits or pubic area are HOT! I think it has to do with the Sexual Pheromones released. Not shaving the legs is a whole different matter. First of all, does anyone see the problem with identifying sexiness with shaving? Illusions and unnatural women...no wrinkles, tan, thin, no armpit or lag hair, makeup, colored hair, eyebrow plucking, perfume, and the list is endless. To make my transition, I bleached both first and now am easing into just letting it be. I admit, I was a slave to our cultural craziness. I don't smell more...actually less. My skin isn't as dry and my legs are not scratching my husband in the almost-always-stubble state. My husband is fine with it and wonders why women "have to" shave. We feel that way, most of us deep inside I think. We have been brainwashed by commercial media to start (in 1920's)and to continue shaving. Think of the industries that would be out of business if we all came to our senses? Personally, it is not a big deal for pete's sake...a bigger deal is wether or not that person is kind, trustworthy, and so on. I feel sorry for other women who grow armpit hair, leg hair, or have to use deodorant. There are some women in the world, less than 1%, never need to shave legs or armpits, and they never need to use deodorant, although they have all the other female hair including scalp hair.

More and more younger women are embracing the idea of their natural femininity and are not bowing to the pressures of western consumerism. Notice how many young women, especially celebs are spotted going shopping barefoot these days too… Whereas a couple of years ago, it was all the rage for women to go for Brazilian waxes, have super thin or drawn in eyebrows with plastered make-up and even wax to the hair of their arms in order to look young and nubile, these days the trend is apparently to be more “au naturel”. Hair removal on western women is a trend that changes from decade to decade. Whereas in the 1950’s the trend was for women to be clean shaven, that changed during the 1960’s-1970’s where a woman was seen as sexy if she kept her pits and/or pubes unshaved. The trend towards hairlessness only really took off from the late 1980’s due to the trends started in pornographic material and carried on through the 1990’s and 2000’s. I am a teenager who has not shaved anything on my body in months and I don't intend to do so for the rest of my life.
Sure I get stares from other kids if I lift my arms when I am outside or in the locker rooms where my legs and pubes are visible. Most teens shave their pubic hair slate cleans, their legs, their bellies, pits, and some even pluck their nipple hair (must be painful especially for us women!). I don't do any of that like I used to.
I consider myself feminist and that is one thing that has started to get me into being natural and not buying into what the media says women should look like.
