Are writers different than non-writers

As I was sitting among my fellow staff members at break the other day when there was a comment mentioned, "Writer's are odd kinds of people," Wow, I thought. This was a good buddy of mine and only knows me as a nursing assistant. Many people I work with do not know that I am a writer. I just have not been able to tell everyone as I work with more than a hundred different staff members and many, many more residents. I do not like to appear as being boastful.

I simply ask how she came to this conclusion. She proceeded to tell me that her sister writes and although she is has warm feelings for her sister, she felt that she was odd in her thoughts, her actions and much more. It of course had to be because she was a writer.

Now, this is not the first time I have heard this comment made by non-writing people. My own family at first was not very happy with my so called 'hobby' that became my income for five years when I was a full-time freelance writer. In those days the told me to get a J.O.B. until I happen to get a check for some of my articles (not a new thing at that time) and my mother happened to see it. Her attitude change as well as many of my family members. It seemed only then that it was viewed as a job because I was able to assist my husband (at that time) to pay the bills.

After this, all my actions or thoughts that I projected was waved away as comments came astonishly out of their mouths as, "Don't worry, she's a writer. That is why she said that." What! My thoughts are valid thoughts. I actually have become offended when I hear this type of comments.

After hearing this come out recently from a beloved buddy, I am now asking, "Are writers different?" I realize that I think differently, but I thought it was because I was left-handed. This was another comment that has been said to me, but that is another hub.

Why are writer's stereotyped as odd, weird, quiet, home-bodies, and unrealistic of thoughts? I actually have been told that I am witty, charming, funny, out-going, easy to get along with and a slapstick comedian - that is - until they find out I am a writer. Then I become odd, weird, eccentric, and much more.

In closing I do want to say that yes, I think too much, have a vivid imagination and some times my thoughts are a bit out there, but that is what makes me - me and I love what I do for a J.O.B. and that I hope to get back into freelance writing because besides my family - its my true love.

I had not heard that about writers but definitely about artists. Guess I have a double whammy coming my direction because I like engage in both! LOL

Do what you love and either the world will beat a path to your door (or away from it.) Ha! In either case, you have their attention!!!

I can't answer all of your questions, but sometimes I don't want to say I am a writer because people do not understand. If I am in a group or on a committee, people think I should be the secretary-- "because you write". I try to explain that writers are not secretaries-- they NEED secretaries.

PeggyW, true. LoL! I guess you do have a double wammy!

Rochelle Frank, I definately need a secretary. There is tons of paperwork in writing. :)

You know, I have no idea but I have heard such comments to my face at first it used to hurt me when people said, "you dig too deep" but now I take it as a compliment that I'm looked at differently because I like being unique. C:
