Are you worried about the long trip that you are going to spend on a plane or a train? Boring and unaccompanied, everything you can imagine is an endless sleep. A laptop may enable you spend some time watching movie but not the whole trip because of the short-lasting of the battery, and also sometimes it’s not convenient to carry it all the way with you ; a book would also be a nice option as long as you would not get bored reading the same one for the whole trip. According to my experience, I am not the kind of person who can bear the boredom of reading the same book throughout those hours. But more books would be heavy and inconvenient to carry; and electronic books in cell phone have so small characters that hurt my eyes a lot. After considering every possible option, it seems that nothing sounds perfect as a time killer on a trip. That’s why I am so happy when I found the Amazon’s new wireless reading device, Kindle Reader.
Having a slim and light body, the New Kindle is just over 1/3 of an inch and weights 10.2 ounces. With the 3G wireless configuration, I don’t have to bother to first download books by a computer and transfer them to the reader any more. I can download books, magazines, movies right from the internet at anytime and anywhere with no monthly fee, service plans or hunting for Wi-Fi hotspots. Everyone who has such experience should know how annoying it is when you can’t get access to the wireless connection. There are also other improvements of this New Kindle, including a faster download speed, improved display, longer battery life, more storage, and faster page turns, that attract my attention.
The 6 things I like the most about New Kindle are:
1. Nicely designed body. Although might be judged as superficial, I care a lot about the appearance of products that I buy. The pursuit of beauty is ingrained in my heart. That’s why the first thing that impresses me is the gorgeous look of this New Kindle Reader. Its slim and white body presents itself elegantly, and the large sized screen evenly distributed keyboards fits my preference for symmetry. And the considerate design of page-turning buttons makes me fall in love with this electronic Reader at once. Considering that after long-time reading, people would probably hold the book in one hand, and adjust themselves to a comfortable position constantly, this reader has the page-turning buttons on both sides, allowing me to read and turn pages comfortably no matter which hand I am using. Also, this button is designed to prevent accidental page turns when picking up or handing Kindle.
2. Access to internet. The inconvenience of transferring documents from computer to the reader keeps the updating frequency of my old electronic readers low. I have always forgotten to transfer the documents in my laptop to my reader. Now, the New Kindle with wireless to internet makes it possible to search, discover and download files from internet directly at a fast speed, I guess I would get the latest version of electronic books and magazines more frequently. The other thing I like it is that, unlike WiFi, it uses the network of 3G, which means that I don’t have to hunt the hotspot like an idiot.
3. Automatic Library Backup. I don’t have to pay for the same book twice. Once I bought the electronic version of a book, I can download it and re-download it for free anytime. No longer do I have to worry about losing the old ones to get room for new ones!
4. Zoomable and paper-like screen. With Kindle, I can read on a screen, but feel like a real paper-book; change the font size when my eyes tire; read in sunlight and enjoy the balmy breeze in spring with no glare.
5. Long-lasting batteries. I hate the experience when I was in the middle of a book when the screen turned black due to low battery. Therefore, the lasting hour of battery is a key factor on my pro-con list. For the New Kindle, I can read on a single charge for up to 4 days with wireless on, and if I turn wireless off, I can read for up to two weeks!
6. ‘read-to-me’ function. When I was young, mum always read a story to me before bed. But once I learnt to read myself, mum never read to me anymore. I missed hearing others reading stories so much, and that’s why I was so happy when I found those “audio books” online. But online resources of such audio books are limited, when I would like to hear a newspaper, it’s not possible anymore. However, with the new text-to-speech feature, Kindle can read every text I select to me unless it is disabled by the rights holder.
In general, New Kindle satisfies almost all my wishes for an electronic Reader. The only one problem now is that I have to save money to buy it as a birthday present for myself!
