Yahoo Groups was created with the acquisition of www.egroups.com in 2000. The idea was to provide a way for groups of people to communicate about a topic via email and a central repository of information that each time a person responded to the list would be added to the knowledge base of the community. This made it easy to collaborate and exchange ideas.
Today, Yahoo Groups is still doing well. It's a top 100 website and remains fairly unchanged in the last 8 years. You can still create public and private groups. Invite people to your group, or as an adminstrator of a group, you can controll access to the site. In order to get information out of a private group, you have to join and be accepted.
This is a review of www yahoogroups.com. I'll provide information about what I like and didn't like about the site. - The site has tons of groups on just about any topic that you can join
- You can use your yahoo account and join for free
- There are very few ads and the site loads very quickly
- Yahoo groups offers group calendars, easy search, message and photo album archives
What I didn't like about the site yahoogroups.com
What I don't like about groups.yahoo.com
- The site has lots of spam groups that clog up the search results and make finding a group difficult
- Many old groups are nolonger updated or active and it's hard to get access to the information
Rating and Recommendation
Rating: 9/10 Recommendation: I would recommend looking at www.yahoogroups.com for people that are looking to interact with people with similar interests on topics that they have information to share on or are looking to tap the expertise of other.

Yahoo! Groups is ok, but you're right about the spam and dead groups. Also, the product hasn't been significantly updated in a really long time.
There are a lot of alternatives to Yahoo! Groups that don't have these problems and that offer a lot more features for free. Big Tent (www.bigtent.com) is one of these services. They offer everything that Yahoo! Groups does, plus member profiles, the ability to collect member dues, multiple forums, sub-groups, classifieds, and ratings and reviews.
