The phenom that is webkinz has gripped the minds of our youth and kept them sitting down at their computers for hours on end. Parents all over the world are pulling their children off the computer hoping that this fad will end soon and they can worry less that www.webkinz.com is not ensnaring their little minds.
The site is full of color and cartoonish appeal. Unfortunately it is a members only service, and I really don't own any webkinz products. So, I got to see the purpose of the site through their virtual tour. The tour was nice and informative, yet the music that played incessantly was grating after about fifteen minutes and I couldn't locate any way to turn it off.
The site is a wonderful example of taking a business to the internet and capitalizing on web 2.0. You purchase your webkinz pet from anywhere that sells Ganz products, then you take your secret code that comes with the stuffed doll and use their website to play virtually with the new toy and even interact with other people's pets. You become a part of a community of people playing with their dolls. While this might seem to be a service that sees only children, their are plenty of young adults and older visitors that make webkinz pets as well. You get to choose the gender of your pet as well, so you aren't stuck with a pet that the game wants to call "Tom" when you already named her "Lucy Bell". Your pet gets their own customizable 3D room to play in as well. Users can spend hours just fixing up their personal webkinz pad.
