If you like to play computer games but find the rules too debilitating, here is a site made exclusively for you- www.cheatplanet.com. Using a ‘cheat' does not exactly mean hacking; it could be a handy tip from an experienced player which you would never have found out yourself. Also, ‘cheating' is no crime if you consider the number of people doing it!
Cheatplanet.com was launched in 1997 and is the number one ‘cheat site' according to the number of people visiting it; 6.1 million visit the site every month out of which 40% are from outside the US.
The homepage is a bit too flashy with advertisements of 3D games jumping at you from all corners. The game names in huge letters zoom in and out which can be irritating to a few. However, the background is done in off white, probably an effort to tone down the colors.
There are several options to get the ‘cheats' you want. You can go directly to the option called ‘cheats' from among the list of categories on the left- PC, PS2, Xbox etc. Once you choose a category, a list of the games of the category appear besides news, previews, reviews, features, guides, movies and forums of the category. Clicking on a game would take you to a page where the cheats appear.
The cheats are those submitted by other players and their user names would be displayed underneath. Some of the cheats are keyboard codes like "God mode
Enter TRIROX as a code". Others are in the form of tips and advices like "On the summer offensive mission at the end when you have 2 destroy the dam, on the other side of the lake, you fly strait into the dam and you go right through it (yes, EVEN in the heap!). Works best in instant action with the dove."
The latest cheats are displayed prominently in a separate section in the lower part of the page.
The log in tab is displayed prominently in the top right corner, however you require a membership only for options like joining the forum where you can discuss the latest games and much more with like-minded people.
The submit cheats option allows you to publish your own discoveries. The fonts used for the game names as well as many other options deserve mention in that they resemble bold black handwriting in capitals.
On the whole, the homepage itself has enough displays of games to attract all kinds of gamers. The pages are choked with advertisements of games as well as of other, mostly technology related products. While generating income for the site, these also clutter the page.
