Walt Disney

Walt Disney was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 5, 1901 and died on December 15, 1966. He created the legendary character Mickey Mouse and was the founder of Disneyland and the Walt Disney World Theme Park. He won 48 Academy Awards in his lifetime and is known as the most significant animator of his time.

His first Academy Award was for the creation of Mickey Mouse in 1932. Disney's first film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was dubbed "Disney's Folly" before its release. Much to the surprise of the rest of the film industry, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was an enormous success; it was the most successful picture of 1938 grossing $8 million ($98 million today). Although there were some rocky roads ahead, Walt Disney ended on top. He was a pioneer in animation, theme-park creation, film production, and screen writing; he created media that generations to come will watch and experience.

Our Favorite Disney Movies

There are some great Disney movies. Here is a list of our favorites:

  • Mary Poppins: Probably one of my favorite movies of all-time. Julie Andrews is unbelievable!
  • Alice in Wonderland: A great movie with adult twists.
  • Aladdin: Robin Williams is all I have to say...hilarious!
  • Bambi: Created in 1942, this is just a timeless classic.
  • The Greatest Game Ever Played: A heartfelt story about a boy and his quest to master the game of golf.
  • The Incredibles: A fun movie for kids and adults.
  • The Jungle Book: I love the music in this movie.
  • Lady and the Tramp: A great movie for little kids; the scariest part is the Siamese cats.
  • Lion King: This movie has a wonderful message.
  • Miracle: The story of the 1980 U.S. hockey team.
  • The Parent Trap: One of my childhood favorites.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Not a children's movie, but a great adult flick.
  • Remember the Titans: A racially divided football team learns to overcome their resentments and play a game they love.
  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: The very first full-feature animated film.
  • Swiss Family Robinson: A Disney classic and wonderful family film.
  • Where the Red Fern Grows: One of my favorite childhood books adapted for the screen.

Thanks, Jimmy. Didn't you go to Disney World when you were in Florida?

I know there is a lot of controversy around Disney movies and its characters, but there is something "magical" about it. I loved Disney movies when I was a child and I didn't grow up thinking I'd marry a prince, although Paul's pretty good;), or want to wear glass slippers and a tiara all of the time. I think that parental role models are much more influential.

Paul's family started a tradition that we will do with our kids; when you're five, and not before, you get to go to Disneyland. On this trip you can do and have whatever you want. There are no siblings, just the five year old and us; grandparents and aunts and uncles will probably want to come, too. The point is for the day to revolve around the one child. Georgia is already talking about it! I can't wait, too. ;)

Sounds like fun, Jimmy.  I know, I can't wait.  It's been a long time since we went.  Luckily, Disneyland in Southern California is just a car ride for us.  Fun, family times

If you go to Orlando or Anaheim, the sometime long lines can avoided by either buying go to the front of the line type passes at now offered there or staying at an official hotel...well worth it for a couple of days. The website http://www.Orlando.us occasionally runs special offers and discounts I haven't seen elsewhere. There's also occasional specials at the offical theme park sites for all kinds of things: active military, citizens of Canada, registered nurses and senior citizens etc.
