Youku.com: Yet another Chinese Version of YouTube.com

Youku, similar to YouTube, is a video sharing website. Youku was founded by Victor Koo, the former President of Sohu. It is believed that Youku has recently generated $25M in funding. Like YouTube, users can upload, view and share video clips on Youku.

This website is well known in the peer to peer sharing circle, mostly because of the website's ability to host videos and movies for streaming. Youku does not cap the time limit of videos, which is not the case with YouTube. YouTube limits the time limit of videos. Youku also does not have any apparent copyright infringement policies enforced. Which actually means that one can easily upload full episodes of any television series on this website.

Youku uses Adobe Flash technology to publish its videos. The website allows unregistered viewers to view the videos, however, they are not allowed to upload any video to the database. So, if you really want to share a video with the world, you better become a registered user. As being a registered user, you can upload as many videos as you want using on-line and Windows-based upload tools.

The video playback technology of Youku is based on Adobe's Flash Player. Almost all of the video sharing websites go for Adobe's Flash technology, as with this technology, users are not required to download any web browser plugin or any software application. But that is not the case with other established video playback technologies such as Windows Media Player, QuickTime and RealPlayer, which requires users to download and install a web browser plugin in order to playback the videos.

For uploading videos, users don't have bother much about the format of the video. Youku accepts a variety of formats such as WMV, AVI, MOV, MPEG and MP4. Although, Youku rivals Tudou, I especially think Tudou is a much better video sharing website than this one. Maybe its because Youku is just trying to make a place for itself. Hence, in the near future, who knows maybe Youku might overtake every video sharing website that's on the cyberspace.

I find youku excellent for the use of viewing movies, but the main reason I tend to avoid it is the very slow loading speed. Sure, it may be fast for the internet users in Asia. But for people like me who live in the west... it takes an eternity to load.

Although Youku is a bit slower than youtube. But the strict copyright infringement policy for youtube makes it sooooooooo annoying!!!! And it also destroys youtube!!!!!!! Theres a video that I tried to upload on youtube and it got rejected because of the stupid copyright policy but it works on youku. In fact, it was China's CCTV's coverage, not NBC coverage. But i don't know why it still says it is claimed by NBC. WEIRD!!! Therefore, I hope everybody get to know youku more better than youtube!!!

its amusing to note that youku slow speed is not perculiar to only me and whatever computer i touch. this is all very fascinating. i definately prefer todou (faster speed) but its only for that reason. thus, if youku can increase that terrible speed that makes people avoid it, its a sure go to the top. ps:copyright laws suck! they are necessary, but that doesn't mean we have to like them.
