The Wyoming Tornado: First look inside a twister!
65
On June 5, 2009, the Weather Channel and their Vortex 2 team captured the first ever look inside a tornado funnel! This is the holy grail of stormchasing. Mike Bettes, the on air personality traveling with the Vortex 2 team, called it the greatest day of his life when he was interviewed on Today.
Take a look at the videos below. Truly amazing footage. They were getting some great shots as the twister formed, but when it turned sideways toward them things got historic. For the first time there is video of the inside of a tornado.
Beyond the excitement of capturing this on video, the real thrill comes from knowing that this data could help predict tornadoes in the future. Better forecasts mean longer lead times for tornado warnings. Lives are saved by brave stormchasers like this.

In Depth: Analysis of the Wyoming Tornado
I've always loved this stormchasing stuff, but I can't believe someone finally got to look up into a tornado. I was seriously beginning to think the closest we'd ever get was the CGI one with Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton in Twister!
