Let’s be under no illusions for all its plaudits the Xbox 360 has some now famous and renowned problems, a lot of which surround issues with the DVD drive system. So the first thing to say is that the Xbox 360 DVD drive repair is possible, but should only be considered when your Xbox 360 is not under warranty. The whole idea of taking on such a repair may come as a surprise to some who believe that their only choice is to send it back to Microsoft for repair or to purchase a new DVD drive.

One sure way of establishing whether you have a DVD drive problem is through recognising the symptoms, so if your Xbox 360 is freezing up during your favourite games or you are receiving the dirty disc screen error you have an Xbox 360 DVD drive problem.

However there are ways to go about repairing your DVD drive and it’s your choice whether you want to try these instead of sending it back for repair or purchasing a new drive system. The first thing is to establish the type of DVD drive that your Xbox 360 uses. Is it a Thomson, Phillips, Laser Installation, or Samsung?

Once you have established the type of drive system associated with your Xbox 360 you need to refer to the tear down instructions of that manufacturer. Whatever you do, resist the idea of blowing cold air into the DVD drive bay, this will only redistribute the dust and will serve no purpose.

It is possible that using a CD/DVD cleaner specific for the job may have a positive result, alternatively you may need to clean the mirror of the laser manually, and this is where it is important that you read the correct manufacturers tear down instructions. This may appear a little technical, but quite feasible! In the end if you want to have a go at repairing this problem, but require more guidance support exists.

This is not for the faint hearted and the tear down manuals do assume a degree of knowledge, so truly only attempt a repair if you feel confident in your own abilities and be aware that any such repair is taken at your own risk.

Alternatively you may wish to check out the online Xbox 360 repair guides, these do not only cover the Xbox 360 red lights flashing problem, also known as the ring of death.
