Does it Work?

It is very common to notice yellow teeth these days. Our teeth are not actually white but rather the hard outer coating of enamel is a bit off-white. And as it thins with age the yellow-gray color of the inner portions of the tooth begin to dominate. Matters are made worse with excessive coffee drinking and cigarette smoking. If you see a heavy smoker smile you will at once notice the stain at the front of their teeth.

Earlier there was no other treatment for it but a cosmetic dentistry which is extremely expensive. Now there are many commercial products available in the market. These are only the diluted version of the whiteners one finds at the dentist's office but they are cheaper of course. So their effect is also diminished because they are not as strong as the original ones. The dentist's products are ten times stronger and so are much more effective. The commercial treatments usually last just a few weeks and one need to continue with the process. Whitening chewing gums and things of the sort do even less. These are more like a preventative measure to be used after drinking a coffee or smoking. All of these chemicals are, however, pretty dangerous and are to be used only if prescribed or suggested by an expert.

There are certain advises that dentist's give to avoid yellowing of teeth. Like the time you need to spend brushing your teeth is at least two minutes twice per day. Holding your brush at a 45-degree angle against your gum line, gently brush from where the tooth and gum meet to the chewing surface in short strokes. Brushing too hard causes receding gums, tooth sensitivity, and, eventual lose of teeth.

Good Oral Habits

Some toothpastes claim to contain tooth whitening material but these are not enough to change the color of your teeth from yellow to white. Talk to your dentist before you try any over-the-counter whitening products. Your dentist would be able to offer you professional treatment. This will certainly be suited to your unique needs and will work better than over-the-counter products.

Be careful as you buy teeth whitening products as some bleaching agents in them may damage your gums and mouth. So always follow the instructions on any whitening product you might start to use.

You need to develop a habit of rinsing your mouth after you eat every time so that food does not stick to the teeth. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Do not drink excessive tea or coffee or other beverages as they always tend to stain the teeth. Never chew betel leaf, betel nut or tobacco. Smoking tends to discolor the teeth to an unpleasant grey. Never scrape the surface of teeth with any sharp instrument as these will roughen the teeth and make them even more yellow. Chewing sugar-free gum for half an hour a day helps clean the teeth.

Yellow teeth can sometimes be intrinsic in nature i.e. the color might be coming from within the tooth. The causes can be either genetic or developmental disturbances. These are to be assessed by your dentist and a home remedy does not help in such cases.
