63So you want to be a fashion designer?
I am a clothing designer. When I was younger and in high school I had no one to give me any tips in this business so I thought I would compile a list of useful tips and advice for anyone wanting to break into my field.
1) Study fashion history- you can't know the basis of current fashion without knowing it's past
2) Get into a fashion program at college- you can never learn to much even if you are the best self taught natural at fashion design, someone always will know more than you.
3) Always look around you at what is going on in fashion.
4) Always put things that inspire you in your work, look to the world around you to inspire you.
5) Keep up with current fashion trends but do not just copy current trends, be original and creative.
6) Learn all the aspects of fashion you can, this includes sketching, sewing, draping, patterning, marketing, promotions, buying etc. The more you know the more you will succeed.
7) Apprentice for another designer or someone working in your feild.
8) Travel the world if you have a chance, other cultures have such interesting varied views on fashion.
9) Always listen to constructive criticism.
10) Always go for your dreams and do not let anyone tell you you cannot make it.

There are a lot of books out there, I would reccomend reading tons of books on design and when you are in highschool sign up for some locally taught sewing classes etc so you will have a headstart when you get to college. Some highschools even have flagship programs with junior colleges and you may be able to take some classes before you reach college level.
Thank you for this, it's greatly appreciated. I am heading off to Otis in LA this fall for fashion design and can't wait. Good luck to you.
I have to admit there were times that I wanted to become a fashion designer but I', scared to pursue it co'z I'm not sure if I can do it. ^^
Anyways your article is great! Very informative and helpful.
Hi! i am 12, I sketch my own designs and have been doing so since I was 9. This year I might get a chance to show some of my stuff at a annual christmas dinner. Your tips are great, but beacause i'm so young I cannot travel the world so I use the internet and I also took a crash course in textile that has helped a lot. You said to study fashion history, what is that?
Dear PersonMy name is Fernando, and I am from Bolivia. Also, I am fifty years old and finally accepted that I am gay. Ever since I do remember, I have sewed all my life without people noticing it, especially my family and friends. Now I have decided to do what I have passion for, which is dressmaking. The only problem is that I have no money to go back to school o buy books, and take fashion designing classes. I am looking for a mentor who can provide me with old patter making books. I have beyond ordinary and average ideas for designing women clothing, however I don't have a formal technical training in the fashion industry area. Please help me to learn more about the fashion designing world and my dream come true. I you could suggest o Gide me to the right direction on how I can get help to get those books, I will appreciate it. I am really commited, friendly, and highly motivated who just wants to pursue career in the fashion industry, which I put it in practice in my home county. Please allow me to learn more and experience more what is out there in the industry. Sincerely Fernando Balderramabalderrama362@yahoo.com
