Life After Bankruptcy

Are you worried about life after bankruptcy? You declare bankruptcy, and then what? Bankruptcy is a big decision and can have a huge impact on, and not a good impact. You should understand what goes into bankruptcy and how your life will be affected after bankruptcy before you go through with it.

Life During Bankruptcy

Life during bankruptcy is no picnic.  It is not fun at all.  It is a time of a lot of meetings and stress.  Without a lawyer, it will be even worse.  You have to send in a petition, work out all your debt, go to a meeting of creditors to be drilled with questions, use any cash you do have and any investments to pay off debt, and even if your debts are discharged, your creditors will have 60 days, that's 2 months, to challenge it.

When you declare bankruptcy, you are going to be very stressed out.  If you are granted automatic stay, which you probably will be if this is your first time declaring bankruptcy, at least you won't have creditors calling you anymore.  When you hand in your petition and get automatic stay, creditors are no longer allowed to contact you.

Bankruptcy is a long, hard process that will eventually lead to life after bankruptcy which is no picnic either.

Life After Bankruptcy

Are you thinking about taking out a mortgage or a car loan after you've finished the bankruptcy process?  You can forget that for at least a few years.  As soon as a lender sees that you declared bankruptcy not too long ago, their going to run like the wind.

If you declared bankruptcy, you did it for a reason, and lenders know it.  They know that you took out loans and used credit cards and didn't pay it back.  They see you as a huge risk and won't bother with you.  They figure you won't pay them back.

This leads to a slippery slope.  You want to build up your credit, but you can't get any credit and loans to prove yourself worthy, which is how you build credit.  You just seem to get further and further away from where you want to be.

A bankruptcy will stay on your credit report for 10 years.  Fortunately, even though it will be difficult for a few years to get a loan, eventually it will be possible.

In order to survive life after bankruptcy, you need to stay positive.  You should also have an idea of what you are getting into before you even go through with it.  Make sure you know what it will mean later on and if you'll be able to pull yourself out of the slump.

Avoiding Bankruptcy

If you can, pay off the debt instead of using bankruptcy. Learn how to set up a budget and cut back as much as you can on your spending. Downgrade your lifestyle wherever possible to pay off as much debt as possible and as quickly as you can.

If you can pay off the debt yourself, you will make much more positive stride. Not only will you not be further damaging your credit, but you will begin repairing it as soon as you stop using credit and start paying everything back on time. You will start proving yourself financially responsible and credit worth from the get go.

Once you've paid back your debts, make sure you never get into that situation ever again. You know what it's like now, don’t repeat the same mistakes. That is another great reason to pay off your debt instead. You will learn how to manage your money and financially plan your life.

Life after bankruptcy isn't all bad. Overall, you will be much better off than before when credit was crushing you. Still, you want to be sure it is the right thing for you at this point in your life.
