Most Effective Dog Training Tips
63
Dogs are great and have proven themselves to be one of the most trainable animals out there. They do extremely well in so many different grounds. You can train a dog to hunt, to protect, to sled, to catch, to retrieve, and so much more. I truly believe that their character and nature make them the most versatile creature other than the human, truly man and woman's best friend.
I do believe that proper dog training uses two concepts in a right balance, those concepts are motivation and corrections.
Motivation -- Motivation is providing your dog an incentive to perform a certain behavior or a reward for a behavior that has just been completed. This could be verbal and physical praise, a treat, or a toy. I prefer to use praise because I can always have a kind word and a head pat handy and can’t always have a piece of hot dog or liver treat at the ready.
Corrections -- Appropriate corrections may be a firm but fair jerk on the leash, a squirt from a spray bottle, or even a low level use of an electric collar. Corrections should not be used to cause pain or ‘beat’ a dog into submission, but to simply act as a deterrent for inappropriate behavior.
Some valuable tips for you ~~~
1) As soon as you first bring your dog home have him wear a leash at all times when supervised. This way, if you have to correct him for chewing your shoe or going to the bathroom on your rug, you can grab his leash quickly instead of trying to chase him down.
2) Do not call your dog to you and punish him. If you punish him when he comes to you he will soon want to stop coming to you.
3) Desensitize your dog to his training collar. Have him wear it at different and varied times. If he doesn’t know what his collar is for, he won’t get ‘collar wise’ and learn that he only has to obey when he is wearing his training collar.
4) Do not shout when training your dog. Use a calm, normal voice and back it up with proper training techniques.
5) Never forget to praise! Many people get caught up with what their dog is doing wrong and forget to praise him for what he is doing right.
6) Always feed your dog in his crate. This will help to form a positive association with his crate.
7) Several dogs don't like to come to their owners because they feel that they will lose their freedom. When your dog does come to you, immediately release him so that he can run back and play. This way he will learn that he doesn't always lose his freedom by returning to your side.
8) Never lose your patience when you are training your dog. Dogs are able to sense that you are losing control and will not respond as well to your training efforts.
Proper dog manners will drastically reduce dog bites, will turn our dogs into better citizens, will result in less runaway dogs, less stray animals, and better relationships between our dogs and our children and all of those ‘non dog-lovers’ in the world.
