Youth Football Plays: Running Plays

Football is a played at many different levels. There are football games that take place between kids that are only seven years old and then there are football games that take places between men who are all at least eighteen years old. As the players get older and more experienced, more complex plays can be run. However, for kids, the youth football plays need to be kept very basic.

The majority of youth football plays will be running plays. This is because running plays are the easiest to execute and they have the least chance of something going wrong. Four great running plays for kids are the dive, the sweep, student body, and the quarterback keeper.

The dive play in youth football is probably one of the simplest plays of all. All that happens is the quarterback takes the snap, turns around, and hands the ball to the running back. The running back then runs the ball either just to the right of the center (this play is called dive right) or just to the left of the center (dive left).

The sweep is another one of the great and pretty simple youth football plays that can be run during a game. Instead of the back running the ball through the middle of the line, for a sweep he’ll try to run around the right (sweep right) or the left (sweep left) of the line. The quarterback can either hand the running back the ball or pitch it back to him, whichever works best with the timing of the play.

Student body is one of the most popular youth football plays. It’s popular because it uses every player on the field to block including the quarterback. Student body usually begins with three running backs in the backfield. The quarterback pitches the ball to one of the running backs and then the ball is run to the right side (student body right) or to the left side (student body left). Leading the way and blocking for the ball carrier are the other two running backs and the quarterback.

Finally, quarterback keeper is another popular youth football play. This play is at least as simple as the dive play. The quarterback takes the snap and runs the ball himself. He may try to run up the middle or he may try to sweep around one of the ends. He also may fake a handoff to one of the running backs before running the ball himself. This play is only popular in the lower levels of football because it requires an athletic quarterback and it also risks injury to the quarterback.

While there are many football plays, there aren’t very many youth football plays. Almost all youth football plays are very basic and simple so that there is very little risk of something going wrong. That’s why the majority of youth football plays are running plays. Four great running plays that are popular are: the dive, the sweep, student body, and the quarterback keeper.
