The Video Battles are On!

As we set a firm foot into Web 2.0, the power of video on the web becomes more and more apparent. High consumer demand for quality cameras at affordable prices has put the thought of a digital video camera in everyones closet as common as having a microwave oven.

In an effort to make the simplicity of loading video up to the web as easy as brushing your teeth, companies have adapted cameras with software installed and built in usb attachments (like Flip Video) to help consumers speed up the process.

So now you've made your speedy motion picture and it is ready to be shared with millions of people. Which social viewing media site do you choose?

Things To Think About

  • Size
  • Time
  • Quality
  • Revenue Abilities
  • Audience

Size Matters

The first factor which may immediately impact your choice between Youtube or Revver is the size of your file and it's duration. While both sites entertain files up to 100mb, Youtube requires the actual playing time stay under 10 minutes.

I recently encountered this dilema when a presentation that ran just over 12 minutes would either have to be cut in two to meet Youtubes requirements, or could be simply loaded up to Revver as the file size was still well under the 100mb requirement. While splitting this particular piece was not an issue, this is now a handy time saving tip to know when creating future videos.

Early pioneers of Youtube still may have or be able to load longer videos. Over time, these longer movies will probably become overwhelmed and harder to find.

Approval Time

If you are under the gun to get a show together and loaded up for viewing in the least amount of time, Youtube is the king. Back in 2006 when the boom began the processing time could take up to a few days for a miniscule 3 minute movie. Since that time they have been on it, and the processing time for that 3 minute movie could fall well under 10 minutes.

Revver carries a longer processing and approval time. A human actually is responsible for checking the content of your piece and they warn you, you may be waiting as long as 24 hours. You might get lucky and only wait 3 or 4 hours for the entire process. Revver also transcodes your video to both Flash and Quicktime formats to give you more flexibility. An email is sent to you upon approval, with the added "It may take a few minutes for it to be publicly viewable" followed by the address of your piece.

Quality

Currently, Revver takes the lead with video clairity and quality. This is partly do to that "extra" time they take in the processing.

There is a new code for youtube, which depending on the video - may greatly increase it's clarity when being viewed on the Youtube site. Here's a quick video on the process.

We Interrupt this Hub for a Commercial Message

Yes, it's true. Commercials and ads make the internet go round, and Revver too. Video tags and content will determine what commercials will be seen when watching a movie on Revver. You may have to watch an entire commercial before seeing your show. And when you take it off the site, additional ads follow your video. There is a small spot on the video for the viewer to close up these ads when they are embedded off site, but this becomes an extra step, and may detract from your movie.

While the Youtube watermark is prominent on all of their uploads, you are not forced into seeing anything other than the video itself. This is key, especially if your trying to focus on one product and just sell one specific thing. The last thing you'll want are competitors ads scrolling across your commercial.

Don't think you can't make money just because you don't have ads displaying directly on your work.

The biggest example of this is the Hub you are reading now. Here on Hub Pages you only have the option to use Youtube or Google video, as you can make money from the adsense revenue collected here.

Who is it for?

Social Bookmarking is Built into Revver

Just who do you want to see your video? Do you want to make it easy to share?

Social bookmarks are an added convenience with Revver. If the average viewer is signed up with one of these services, they are reminded just by seeing the icons and are more likely to spread the word when they find something they like. No matter what the topic, this increases the chances for more viewers being drawn to your collection and possibly hitting on one of those ads.

Youtube users are at the mercy of the viewer having their own icons for social bookmarking built into their personal toolbars.

Final Thoughts

Before loading any video to the web, take time to consider what purposes you would like to use it for.

As a visual artist I prefer Youtube for the bulk of my productions. I don't want to overload the viewer with sales pitches and really enjoy sharing the pure content of my work.

For the reason of the 10 minute rule, I have been prompeted to use Revver for a slightly longer piece. The bookmark reminders are not a bad thing, and neither is the chance to occasionally recieve some additional revenue for my work.

My personal recommendation? Have an account with both! These accounts are quick to set up and both have their advantages. Have your Youtube, and your Revver too.

Thanks for the great info. For me, I use Youtube because it is ver easy and fast to upload my videos. And they get indexed fast too. I have a lot of problems loading videos to Revver. I took me almost a week and after 7 attempts before I finally uploaded my first video to Revver and it's only a 27MB mp4 video.
