Garden Decor: Fountains

Garden water fountains can add a wonderful touch to your outdoor space. Fountains come in many styles and sizes, so you are sure to find one that will suit your taste.

One of the first things to think about when looking for a garden water fountain is what do you want your fountain to be made of? There is a variety of materials that you can get. Which you decide on depends on where the fountain is going, what climate you live in, and personal preference.

Outdoor fountains are a style that should also be taken into account when you are shopping. Wall fountains come in many styles similar to ground fountains, so you can either buy whichever one suits your outdoor space, or buy a matching set.

Types of Fountain Materials.

When it comes to materials, you have a nice variety to choose from. Some of the most popular garden water fountains are still made of stone. Stone holds up well to weather, so it does not have to be protected from the sun and rain. Slate is particularly popular right now, especially in more modern fountains that use boxes to hold the water. There are two major drawbacks to stone. One is that stone can be very expensive, especially if you are buying marble. The second drawback is that stone is very heavy, so it is difficult to move if you decide to relocate your fountain.

Glass has become an increasingly popular material to use in garden water fountains. A sheet of glass is often mounted in a frame of some other material, often metal. The water is fed through the fountain so that it cascades down the glass. There are a few different ways these work, and you can get this style in a garden wall fountain as well. If you are interested in glass, be sure it can be put somewhere where it is not likely to be broken.

Other Materials

Wood can be a beautiful material to have a fountain made of. There are many shades of wood, and garden water fountains made of it can be great accents for a more rustic theme. One thing to keep in mind with wood is that it can rot. Fountains made of wood should be treated already when bought, but be sure to read the instructions to see if there is any special maintenance a wood fountain needs.

Fiberglass is a more recent addition to fountain making, but it has become very popular for some obvious reasons. Fiberglass is inexpensive, so fountains made of it are more readily available for purchase. Fiberglass is also light, so it is a great choice for garden wall fountains.

One style that has been popular for a very long time is fountains that have two or more tiers in the shape of bowls. The water comes out the top into a small bowl, which overflows into a larger bowl, and so on. These come in almost any material fountains are made of, from stone, to metal, or fiberglass. Statues and waterfall style fountains also come in any of these materials.

Garden water fountains are worth the money spent on them. They bring a sense of relaxation to the space, and can last for many years with a little maintenance. Perhaps a fountain is just what your outdoor living space needs to bring it all together.
