Zelaya Back to Honduran BORDER: CBS
66The title of a recently released CBS News article is "Zelaya Returns To Honduran Border". We have to wonder how long this standoff will continue/can last.
The sub-title is: "Deposed President Sets Up Camp Despite Foreign Leaders Urging Him To Avoid Confrontation". As this crisis drags on, it is becoming increasingly clear that no one is listening to anyone.
The first sentence is "Deposed President Manuel Zelaya returned to the Honduran border on Saturday and announced he would set up camp there, despite foreign leaders urging him not to FORCE a confrontation with the government that OUSTED him from power in last month's coup". What's the point of "urging" someone if they are not willing to listen? The words "force" and "confrontation" reinforce the fact that aggression is inevitable.
Zelaya told a hoard of supporters that "We are going to stand firm. Today, we are going to set up camps here with water and food. We are going to stay here this afternoon, tonight and tomorrow morning". Hopefully, this standoff won't end up like the standoff in Thailand between supporters and opponents of ex-Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra that ended in a stampede in which some people were stuck in Bangkok obviously unexpectedly and against their will while others were killed.
According to Dania Gomez Perez, a 26-year-old schoolteacher WHO WALKED ALL NIGHT ALONG COUNTRY ROADS to join the Zelaya rally, "WE ARE READY TO RISK OUR LIVES" in order for Zelaya to return to the presidency. Looks like they're not joking.
According to US State Department spokesman PJ Crowley, "Secretary Clinton DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH INFORMATION about THE REPRESSIVE REGIME...AND IF SHE DOESN'T HAVE THAT INFORMATION, (then) IT IS CLEAR THAT SHE DOES NOT HAVE ALL THE CONTEXT ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON. Her words should be to REPRESS and admonish the coup government, not the heroic people in resistance". The phrases "Secretary Clinton does not have enough information" and "Her words should be used to repress and admonish the coup government" contradict each other (the former suggests neutrality while the latter is in favor of Zelaya).
Finally, acording to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, "It's really an unfortunate role that Oscar Arias is playing. I don't know who spoke first, but without (a) doubt, ARIAS IS FOLLOWING ORDERS FROM THE STATE DEPARTMENT - and that's an embarrassment for a Latin American president".
So, in conclusion, this standoff is nowhere near over. Zelaya and Micheletti continue to spar with each other over the Costa Rican presidency and Hugo Chavez is blaming the US State Department for the fiasco.
