Why Should I Link My Subdomain To Google's Webmaster Tools?

We recommend linking your subdomain, a very simple process, to Google's Webmaster Tools. When you link to the Webmaster Tools site you will be able to:

  • Gain a better understanding of Google's view of your site and diagnosing problems, e.g., is Google crawling your site and indexing it?
  • Look at your link and query traffic, e.g., look at internal as well as external links to your subdomain and find out which search queries are bringing your subdomain traffic and how those searchers are finding you.
  • Share information about your subdomain with Google.
  • File a reconsideration of your site request if your subdomain has unfairly lost traffic.

Below is the step-by-step guide in linking your subdomain to Google's Webmaster Tools as well as a photo guide.

Step 1: Set up your Google Analytics Account

If you don't have a Google Analytics account set up, you need to do this before you can link your subdomain to the Google's Webmaster Tools site. Here's the Learning Center Hub on setting up your Google Analytics account.

Step 2: Linking your Subdomain to Webmaster Tools

  1. Go to: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/home
  2. Click "Add a site..."
  3. Type in your subdomain, e.g., robin.hubpages.com (do not type in www before the subdomain!)
  4. Click "Continue"
  5. The next screen asks you to verify your ownership. In most cases, the first screen to show up under the "Recommended Method" tab will be the correct option. The screen must mention your Google Analytics account. If it does not, click the "Alternate Methods" tab and the Google Analytics bubble. Click "Verify".
  6. You should immediately be congratulated for verifying your subdomain! Your account will take a few days to gather data. Come back and check soon!
