Contradictions in America......

The President stands in the light of the cameras
as the piranhas hustle for the best picture
oh such emotional eloquence

The senators line the greeting path waiting.....
being paid by the hour ........
my..my such a beautiful relevance

In the back the limos gleam in polished
perfections .........the machine guns
beneath the black cloaks

And ..back ....back....further back
the masses mix in a sea of perfume
and a cigars drifting smokes

Now in prime times reality the cameras
swing to the waxed and powdered faces
of our medias American idol

All is well along high walls of the kingdom
as the princess wades in the sea
posing in the sands of tidal

Ahh but the confetti remains as the lone sweeper
moves among the empty chairs
thinking of wasted paper

We look to leadership .....but for what
all of this is just an illusion
One huge cosmic caper

In the end ........of course none of this is
about image .......but did you send the check
for our cable

Maybe in heaven we can pray for reality
and truth .....when our God lays
our pasts on the table

The tragedies in Arizona right now in constant limelight although next week to be forgotten
And yet one the streets of L.A. or Chicago ? Young boys and girls die each day......each hour....each moment .....
in drivebys.......kidnappings ......domestic abuse.......America the land of the free ..... our priorities , realities and perspective ............ just slightly out of focus !

I could not agree with you more dad! It's a tragedy what happened....this nut that did this, is just that.. a nut. I do believe however that politicians need to clean up their talk! You have a great point though....what of all the children murdered on a daily basis, what of all the women and men homeless on the streets that die in the cold harsh winters? For that matter, what of the mentally ill needing to be medically treated that are on the streets more and more due to lack of funding or poorly staffed mental institutions shutting down on a daily basis!!

The expression is superb:” And yet one the streets of L.A. or Chicago ? Young boys and girls die each day......each hour....each moment .....

in drivebys.......kidnappings ......domestic abuse.......America the land of the free ..... our priorities , realities and perspective .”. Let it be an ardent endeavor for politicians or every one to do the best for LA or Chicago and for America as well.

Does cleaning up the talk of any one person change the inhumanity held in an individuals heart? We all hold the ability to destroy another life with in our own. Today we are fed a constant stream of death with out consequences within the media that entertains us. Video games that glorify killing and make it seem commonplace. TV and Movies that so killing on a mass scale with out any reference to the tragidy of the lives taken or those left behind. Gangs and Clubs that glorify pain and death as a "strong" way to be.

Personal responsibility and accountability is what we all need to learn ... yet it is so much more our nature to let someone else lead so we can but follow. Or play quote roulette and claim words and thoughts that fit what we want to see.

Scapegoats cannot replace an individuals actions. Illness of the minds and hearts of men are shown everywhere.

Can we ever rise above mans inhumanity to man.... my answer says no. Not until we can tame the beast within, and change the focus to our true self and its place in the world around us.

Focus is indeed in need of adjusting Ahorseback. Thank you for this.

Profound. And sad but yet true. To realize that there are stories told each day of the incidents that make headlines, but what of those that never do. It makes one wonder such as you have, how we treat our fellow Americans. Those that will never make headlines, but yet pay a dear price for their own freedom, and also for ours.

Thank you for such a true account of how it really is.

Blessings and hugs,

Laurie

This is great and so true about tragedies soon being forgotten. We get in such a hype initially and then it's gone and we don;t remember it until another similar tragedy comes around. I always think about the tragedies that happen everyday, like you mentioned in your last phrase. There is much worse happening in people's homes, on the streets, etc. Profound writing here.

Hello H.P., can we afford to have faith in your words? In the words of our new Leader ,"The Audasity of Hope"???

But I do believe the people will lead us out , not our "Leaders".....Thanks for sharing here. All words are important yours and mine!

Hi Laurie Dawn , I still like saying that name ! On an individual basis Laurie , almost always, I have so much faith in the goodness of man. Yet collectively I'm dissapointed in our focus. And maybe we rely too much on that skewed media box for sure. But leaders need desperately to lead!!! And they don't . Do you think there's just too much divisiveness in mankind for the answers we need?

It seems like the politicians just wait for a tragedy to happen so they can get behind their podiums and spout their nonsense, trying to take yet one more right away. Because they don't go to Chicago or LA or any of the other streets screaming of the tragedy's that occur there daily, I refuse to give them my attention.

The only thing we have to fight back with is our minds, pen and paper. Or in your case - a Computer and a good program!

Great work!!

I love Hubs, because of this, because of the exchange. You all deal in hope as I hear you speak through your words. I had to express my want to give you all big hugs after I read the poem and then the responses. Truth, action, we need these things! Ahorseback as always I love your writing and you have my mind spinning and my heart flowing in passion. I love to see intelligent people who give a damn!

My gosh Marina you humble me . All of us are intelligent , at least our hearts are , perhaps its our fears that cloud our judgement. We, you and I, are the answer . The change has to come from the people . From the street up! There is no better place to start than right here , right now. Hubbers can change the world! Hugs Marina .
