The Mystery of Chance

By Tony DeLorger © 2011

Chance is the third spoke in the wheel of indecision,

a definitive action within the shades of black-and-white.

Motivated by the stillness of uncertainty it seduces,

giving options to a shift in responsibility.

Chance is the worst and best of possibility,

invoked by men and imparted by the laws of balance.

Is it a random event or does chance have purpose,

to render outcomes to the desperate by example.

Chance is the quest of the gambler,

trying to tether the beast and to master its opportunities.

Seduced by its prospects they play with fire,

a flame that can light the darkness and burn down a world.

Some call it luck, but perhaps there is purpose in its action,

reward for right living or an eraser for poor judgement.

The results of chance are evident but the name is a misnomer,

it is far more purposeful than being at rest.

Chance is the cleansing of action not taken,

the results of actions undertaken and the last bastion of learning.

It can be the teacher by default, the arbiter of balance,

and the maker of dreams and nightmares.

Chance can also be a step to freedom,

a path not trodden and the purveyor of unrecognised possibility.

When chosen decisively chance can open doors,

to worlds not dreamt, horizons not conquered.

Embraced by the creative mind chance can be a direction,

a step onto unknown lands, seizing life by the throat.

It can furnish opportunities undisclosed by decision,

and paint a new landscape.

But for most, luck remains a mystery,

a dream of reward without effort.

Balance tells us otherwise.

Very deep, intriguing piece. My favorite lines...

"When chosen decisively chance can open doors,

to worlds not dreamt, horizons not conquered."
