Two Friends till the End ........

In the din of noise ...... snow to rain as the
overflowing brooks convene
They tried wading across
the flooding stream

Such are the ways of youth .....gambling
with mortalities choices
But over the sounds of cascading water
no one hears the voices

Laughing and jumping from
stone to fallen log
He loses his footing in the springtime
rain and fog

His hold on his friends collar is
slipping and cold
Ice on the grip of death untill
he loses his hold

For two hours he holds on but cannot
feel his arm
Yet in the din of the river
waiting in the shadows of harm

Then away in the river as the mist
absorbs his friend
One life will go on the same time
another will end

They found him in the morning
in the shallows downstream
And yet as the years passed .......your
friend still walks in a dream

And just as his vision jumps from the edge
you awaken in a tangled spell
Your hand gripping the sheets
like the collar that you held

A very sad poem

Tragedies like these stay with us always and haunt our dreams.

I hope this did not happen to you.

Rosemay , No not to me but in the next town , the boy that drowned was the police chiefs son. And sadly yes the other boy held onto him for a while before he had to let go...:-}

How sad. This type of thing happens sometimes and we try valiantly to save someone only to see them slip away while we wail in horror. Your poem could reference so much ahorseback. The attempted rescue from drugs, alcohol, suicide attempts and a hundred more tragedies. Well written with compassion and love.

Two boys chasing adventure on the river, only one returning. I know this story, ahorseback. In my story the two boys were named Dale and Kristian. Kristian tried desperately for over an hour to rescue Dale, long after all hope was gone. Today Kristian lives with a haunting thought in his mind that he should have tried harder. He need not suffer from this thought as there is not an ounce of blame, just gratefulness for his efforts, but suffer he does for Kristain loved his best mate like no other.

Thank you for sharing this tragic story so beautifully. I relate and weep for these two boys as I do for those in my story.

Hello Fennelseed , I have thought about this occurance for years and shake my head each time I think of ,How? And knowing Dales story , I never put the similarities together. I'm sorry for the pain it causes you ,as I'm sure it does. And yet we know Dale was truely living out his dream ,wasn't he ! Dale ,just like Tom , has amazing friends and family too! God Bless you for your sacrifice and your understanding of boys , men and life! Because thats all we can do is to try and get our hearts wrapped around these things . Remember Fennel , Dale looks down from above!.......Hugs Ed.

Every day we read things and think 'That is the worst thing I've heard' this surely is one of those and must be terrible for the friend who survived. It almost is identical to a short story I wrote years ago although the ending wasn't as brutal.. You captured it well,
