20 Unspeakable Ideas for New Directions in Creative Writing Prompts

The idea is simple, use one of these various ideas to inspire yourself to write a hub about it. You can agree, disagree, it is unimportant.

1. Name the most evil thing that has ever lived after your favorite and most beloved pet you have owned, and give the world one day in the horrors that your cute demonic animal will wreck on the earth in 24 hours.

2. Tomorrow you are told by an angel that you will die at exactly 12 noon, what will you do with you last day on earth?

3. Write 300 or more words without using puncuation, capitialization, or proper names even once. You may use any form of poetic or imporper syntax and grammatic styles. You may also use run on sentances or symbols from mathematics....the title can contain only three letters.

4. Interview someone who is imaginary, but must be made from your own imaginary ideas - and name them something that is not normally a name like Fork Fingered Freddy etc.

5. Describe a sexual scenario with only words that are suitable for nursery rhymes and fairy tales for children, no body parts or anatomical words may be used,

6. Write about a clown or a mime being arrested and tried for murder. Anything goes from there.

7. Write a short but controversal manifesto about anything but the catch is, it cannot be your true beliefs. You must lie about every detail including your name on the piece as author.

8. Committ plagarism using only your own actual writings...but every stolen sentance you must accidentally delete or mix up the order of at least three words.

9. Write a story starting with the ending and work your way backward to its beginning. You can ponder what rules must be broken to achieve this act of grammatical armageddon.

10. Choose 23 words and make them each the first word of a 23 line poem, but they must be alphabetically in order or in reverse.

11. Ask 20 questions of anyone interview style, and try to get enough information from the 20 questions for the reader to guess what the person does for a living, what they are named, and what city they live in without ever asking those questions directly from them,

12. Kill anyone from history and tell us in a short story how the world was different thanks to their untimely and imaginary demise.

13. Concieve a plot to take over the world, use less than ten paragraphs to do so.

14. Do a Journalistic essay with any famous children's television or movie character that is not a human being...Barney, the Muppets, Yoda, Pete's Dragon, or a cartoon character...no limits.

15. Write a personal diary about your life, if you were the opposite sex you are now. At least ten entries, with a year in time passing between each. Start at age 10 or younger.

16. Make up a conspiracy theory about anything that you can find commonly in your home, kitchen or work place. Go wild with it...

17. Write your own eulogy and be an obnoxious ungrateful ass to your loved ones on the day of your funeral. Now they will get to know the real you, knock em dead.

18. Aliens abduct you from your home on Christmas Eve, tell us a new Yuletide yarn from any perspective that idea takes you.

19. You are a pyromaniac, describe your 21st birthday party - and blow at least one big piece of furniture, a car, or bigger item up in the story.

20. You are a attacked by a Werewolf on Halloween - how does your life change for the better or worse. And what do you tell your friends and family, have fun and humor as a major story developing motif.

blake - you can be assured after this creative exercise no hubber would have the nerve to accuse you of not being original and imaginative.

Well I certainly would never accuse another hubber of those things either...but I got a lot of my mama in me, and the rest can only be blamed on a mix of hillbilly bloodline, babyboomer genetics, and that I once met Miles Davis at a Reggae Sunsplash festival. Man do not ever smoke a joint with a Jazz Master - your art will never be the same.

I've bookmarked. I'll make time to do at least one of these... not sure which yet. Thanks, great hub

Fantastic prompts for writing, blake4d. I particularly like #4 and #11 on this list. Thx for writing. Anyone who reads this hub will never have to suffer writer's block again!!

I am glad it is getting some really good response. I put some very serious thought into this hub. It also seemed that my natural knack for the logically absurd POV came through with shining colors, and translated well to help others get inspired. Groovy...=)

The logically absurd POV works for you, blake4d - keep it up in the too-groovy future! I'm wondering if, perhaps, the logically absurd POV works well because (thank goodness) it's not just more mainstream yaddayadda! What's outside the box is always worth taking a look at and discussing.

I think everyone should take time to try writing out of their idealisms. It is tough - I have been kinda trying to exercise different mechanisms one day prose, one day review or interview, one day fictional, one day try to write serious article. I was outta the writing game for a few years, burnout from other artistic endeavours not fulfilling me. Ya know...but the hub is a chance finally to experiment a bit see how different styles feel. I was thinkng of doing a few days of straight Haiku just to see how long I can stand the meter. Could pound thru some hubs I bet....lol

This hub is awesome lol! Mr. Winslow eats souls? He's my pet rat lol!

Even the name Mr. Winslow itself is kinda creepy, but then he's your pet, and a rat. OMG that is poetry in motion. Mr. Winslow could have a whole series of misadventures, from a rat like perspective. Roll with it baby, roll...LOL

I fancy having a go...... i must admit not the first, and i have not got to the end yet, but i fancy the one about only having a short time to live, i will think about it for a while, have a stab at it, then come back and read more. This is a most useful hub, and i have pressed the useful button, i thank you

Good Day blake4d

I just may use a couple of those ideas soon. I am particularly intrigued by idea #4: interviewing someone imaginary. This reminds me of various psychoanalytic exercises I heard about, concerning communicating with and healing your "inner child."

One of them is a writing technique. Write questions for yourself with your dominant hand and then try to answer them with your non-dominant hand. Another is simply a form of self hypnosis. You are to visualize yourself, both as you are right now and as you were when you were ten years old, or something. One can learn a lot about oneself using those techniques, including the one you propose, blake4d.

The other one I'm particularly struck by #7 in which one is to write a manifesto about beliefs that are the exact opposite of your own true beliefs. This seems like another wonderfully self revelatory exercise -- in that it would surely help one to clarify further what the exact nature of his real beliefs are.

One last thing I want to say before I close this out. There are many fine writers are HubPages who offer tutorials about how to increase their Hub Karma and all that. But you are one of the few who seem to realize that writing is more than a meal ticket. It is a passion, something you do because you can't do anything else! For a minute there, I was getting cynical.

Thanks for switching things up a little! See ya around.

WC thanx for getting the purpose behind my usual suggestions for writing, if you look through my hubs you will see that I have used the suggestions in more or less productive ways. I won't give away my trade secrets here...but they are helpful in expanding your options and ability as a writer. I mean everything I say both in seriously and humorously, but never write anything that I think would be unworthy of real world application. Thanx for your input, and glad to have reinspired the cynial side of your promising writing future. Keep on Hubbing. Blake4d

I appreciate this plethora of ideas. As an English teacher, I can really use some new prompts. The one you mentioned about writing without punctuation, capitalization, syntax, grammar and using run-on sentences is actually very similar to the stream- of- consciousness technique used by Hunter S. Thompson, gonzo journalist for the Rolling Ston ( although he used a lot of LSD too!)
