6 of the Best Ways to Make Money Online As A Writer

Source

The Writer

As a writer there are many different ways to perfect your writing skills and if you are lucky make some money too.

In this hub I write about the various methods you could employ that will enable you to work at home doing what you love most, writing.

You could become a:

Freelance Writer

The ‘freelance’ in freelance writer has its meaning steeped in medieval history as it evolved from the employment of the knight or mercenary who sold his services to the Lord paying the highest price, equating to “free lance”

Similarly a freelance writer is a person who sells his writing skill to the highest payer. They may also work for a company or individual on a contractual (formal and informal) or project basis. The freelance writer will usually be self-employed and aim to produce a piece of writing or project within a set time frame. Once a project or fixed piece of writing was complete the freelance writer would simply move on to the next project.

Freelance writers come in all type of guises and they maybe business, marketing, health and wellness, technology or web writers. Who they write for is also varied, they may write for newspapers, magazines (online & offline), corporations, websites or non-profit organizations writing bids, proposals and grant writing.

If you decide to become a freelance writer you will have to ascertain your strengths and weaknesses so that you will be able to target jobs in which you can demonstrate your writing abilities.

Once you know what you are good at you can begin to apply for jobs/projects. It is essential to carry out a good job that warrants top marks in feedback because your future as a freelance writer depends on it. When prospective hirers are looking for writers read your good feedback they are more likely to hire you than someone without it.

Many freelance writers complain that it is very difficult to get work from the online writing companies. This may be because there is too much competition or they do not have advance/5* status. I recommend setting up your own Freelance Writer website and market your professional writing. If you need assistance with setting-up a website, SEO and web content you can hire the services or technology professionals for $5 at fiverr.com.

Copy Writer

A “Copywriter” is someone who writes or edits copy or written content for advertisements or promotional materials. They are usually found in marketing and sales environments and write content for sales letter, websites, articles, books etc for virtually any category such as business, entertainment, sports, TV and radio or education for example.

Copywriters may work freelance or be employed by marketing companies or large corporations; the latter are referred to as staff copywriters. However, they usually work as part of a team to create promotional materials designed to sell a product or service or promote a person, or idea.

Copywriters should possess strong language skills and know how to write content that will memorable and put the company, product, service or person firmly in the mind of the public. They should familiarize themselves with the industry they intend to write copy for, acquire knowledge of terminology used, and find out about on-going ad campaigns including past campaigns as it could help a copywriter avoid past errors as well as enable them to be innovative and set a new tone. Knowing who the company’s competition is and what products and marketing materials they produce is vital to any campaign a copy writer undertakes.

Working as a Copy Writer can be quite lucrative especially if you protect your product by copyright.

Article Writer

An Article Writer is someone who works online or offline writing specialized content for a specific niche or topic. A good article writer should possess a high level of written English grammar and spelling; for online writers a good working knowledge of basic SEO, knowing where to place and optimize keywords, keeping the content relevant to the title and topic and how to write a summary suitable for search engines is necessary.

There are many opportunities available to article writers, and companies such as Hubpages, Suite 101, Squidoo, eHow and others offer a platform to writers to write articles under a diverse category list.

The aforementioned article writing directories also offer a method whereby writers can make money. These companies monetize your article webpage so that each time it is viewed the viewer has the option of clicking advertisements provided by such companies as Google, eBay, Amazon.

You can also write articles independent of these directories by either setting up you own article writer website offering your writing skills or you could bid on projects at directories such as Elance, or sell your skills on sites such as Fiverr.com

The best way is to set up your own personal writing website and market it online.

As the Internet continues to expand website owners, ezines, businesses and corporations are going to need your writing services. Therefore as an article writer you could make a lot of money and a decent living.

Blogger

A blogger is someone who writes a blog, which is a collection of content that is chronicled in date order, focussing on a specific topic or subject matter that is updated regularly.

It is quite easy to make money as a blogger. All you need to make it as a blogger is inside knowledge, and knowing what the masses are browsing the Internet for is the key to your success.

First things first, you must find and address a problem or ascertain what people are interested in. This can be done by researching keywords using Google’s keyword tool. If there are over 10,000 searches per month for your chosen keyword then you can be assured that it is something people are interested in and will appreciate any information blog about it. For example, ‘How to make money online’ is searched times, this indicates that people are looking for an answer. This is also your opportunity to write a blog on one or more ways people can make money online. For example, I write a blog review on Money Making Products, and each time a new product is launched I blog about the product and whether or not it is worth purchasing. This is my top selling blog!

The main way you make money as a blogger is to monetize your blog by signing up to Google Adsense, affiliate programs on the same subject matter you are blogging about, and other companies such as Amazon and eBay. Every time someone clicks on those ads you will earn a commission.

You could also consider selling advertising space on your blog, but this can only be done if you own the blog.

Whatever you choose to blog about it is important that you stick to the subject matter. Do not make the mistake of blogging about different topics in the same blog.

Find a problem, provide an answer, monetize your blog and regularly update it and you will make money as a blogger.

Professional Writer

A professional writer is one who produces technical writing wherein they create, design and maintain technical documents, which may include website content, user guides and manuals, teaching aids, project management and design specifications.

The professional writer is expected to have a degree preferably with a 2:1 grade and have a good command of the English language. He or she can be qualified in a variety of subjects from technology, medicine and law to architecture, science and marketing. But regardless of their specialism they should also have skills in:

  • Information design
  • Training material development
  • Illustration and Graphic Design
  • Website design and management and
  • Business Analysis

Professional writers make their money through writing for companies, corporations, educational establishments, government bodies, fashion houses, music channels, and food networks, to name a few, by providing up-to-date material relevant to the specific category.

By way of example, as I am a law major, I earn an income through writing revision guides on specific areas of English Law for under graduates.

Therefore if you have a specific profession you can put your knowledge to use and make money as a professional writer.

Short Story Writer

A short story writer is one who tells a story in a succinct manner but without losing any of their creative and artistic flair.

A short story can be written in any style or genre just as long as it provides a fulfilling and complete tale of its characters and subject.

To make money from short story writing you should turn your attentions to magazines (online and offline) and newspapers as well as entering short story competitions. The average lengths of between 2,000 to 4,000 words are probably the best marketable stories. Carry out some research to find out what people are interested in reading. Is it chick lit, love stories, thriller or adventure? It is important to know who your target audience is going to be.

However, one note of warning, you should be careful when selling your short story. If you sell your short story exclusively you will not be able to make money from it through another outlet, not even from your own website, so unless the exclusive deal is worth it don’t sign away your rights. Having said that, an exclusive deal could be a good way of building up your writer’s CV especially if you are a newbie.

A better way of selling your short story would be to set up a system where you sell first rights, followed by reprints and anthology rights (a collection of works) before publishing online. Because once you publish your short story online you lose your first rights status, plus you are heavily restricted on reprints and anthologies.

You are so right nicole-cw, Freelance writers do enjoy more freedom in which they can use their writing skills. As a freelance writer I have indeed learned so much from researching subjects I have not been familiar with. So freelancing not only pays the bills but improves my intellect!

The overview on the different types of writer was really useful. Freelance writers seem like the only one who is not limited to one type of writing. They can do copywriting and technical writing. At the same time, they can also write articles, blogs and even short stories. The other writers, on the contrary, are restricted to a certain type of writing. I prefer the freedom that freelance writers enjoy. They get to learn while doing more than one type of writing.

You're welcome Wendell. If you want to make money from your writing skills you really should try and narrow down the topics you are good at writing about and choose a niche you can specialise in from that list of topics.

Good luck!

Aww Redberry, you'll soon find your skill set. Try a few of the quicker writing methods such as blogging and article writing to ascertain whether either or both are for you, then proceed to freelance writer to get a feel for that skill. The other three will require some experience and if you decide to pursue them you may have to take a course. Good luck!

I can't really put myself into any of the categories of the poll yet - I'm so new I don't think I'm *anything* yet! But this is a really informative article for me and other newbies, and widens my perspectives of what I might try in the future. Great Hub as always, editorsupremo - thanks for sharing your professional advice.

Hey Angelo, so you write as a hobby, that's ok. Some people just like to write because the enjoy it whilst others write as a profession. I started off writing as a past-time but was made redundant during the recession and began writing professionally to earn an income. It is quite different when writing becomes a job, but if you love writing you will still enjoy it.

Lots of good information here. I have a couple of blogs on blogger and write for Hubpages (sometimes Squidoo). Not a professional and not sure that is the direction I want to go. I just like to write: poetry, funny stories, articles, etc. Of course, I may have to reconsider if my current employment is terminated. Voted up and shared.
