A Christmas of Love

The wind was harsh

And snowflakes swirled all about

It was Christmas Eve

And he should have been at home

With his family

A brightly lit Christmas tree

Fire in the fireplace

His little daughter

Happily toddling about

Instead he was roaming the streets

His mind in a jumble

Making his heart ache

With each decorated house he saw

The Christmas lights

Merrily twinkling

In the dark night

Even though it was snowing

The stars were out

In the frosty night sky

There were lighted Santas

And merry snowmen

Then he stopped by a house

With a large picture window

A family was gathered

Laughing and happy

By a Christmas tree

And every silvery strand of tinsel

That he could see

Brought a hot tear

That coursed down his frozen cheeks

If was then that he took the time

To reflect on what had happened

All of the years before

His wife’s ruined dinners

His late home comings

Another business trip

Taking him away

He was away the day his daughter was born

And on and on

Until one day she’d said

That she loved him

But she couldn’t live their life

For the two of them

He didn’t live he existed

For his job and money

He never thought of it that way

Until the day his wife

Told him to just go away

And the little tearful face

That couldn’t understand

Why daddy was leaving

If had taken him a year

To put it all together

To realize what life was really all about

But his wife no longer believed

And he wondered what they were doing this Christmas

He had decided that family came first

But would she take him back?

Or was there another already with them?

How silly it all seemed now

To put work above all

All that meant so much and more

Just for that extra dollar

And he had to wonder why?

Right then and there he made his move

He spun about and headed for his car

He would bring them Christmas

And he would bring them love

But when he got to their house

It was dark and empty

She hadn’t even had Christmas lights put on

And he wondered where they were spending Christmas

After a long year of painful thoughts

A year of a child wanting her daddy

She had decided it no longer mattered

She would do what she could to change him

And so she had decided to bring Christmas

To him at his apartment

When bewildered and feeling lost

He opened his door

The lights came flickering on

First he saw the lighted Christmas tree

Then a small form hurled at him

And a little laughing face was looking up at him

A little unsure and scared

His wife said, “I brought you Christmas and love”

They took it all back home

And they had the best of Christmases

And knew that it would be

A shiny, New Year for all three

This is the second hub within an hour that has brought a tear to my eyes. Your story had the same effect as Will Starr's "Was it meant to be" I read a short time ago for the second time in 9 months.

You have written a beautiful story of which I think will happen often over the next couple of weeks.

Take care, keep warm and have a nice weekend.
