A Dark Pledge, My Secret Edge

By Tony DeLorger © 2011

Reminiscent of days gone,

I wear the mark of times endless assault.

No more the youthful model of vibrant life,

I droop, a careless remnant of past laurels.

Recognition wanes as mirrors reflect memories,

silent films with muscular protagonists,

victorious, all the better from battles fought,

me, standing feeble, the smell of dank corpses on battlefields.

What was once is no more, lost to the play of life,

the invincible turned sour, under a sun once honoring.

I stand a shadow, but with a mind filled

with the fixations of possible doom, but the reality of survival.

I pledge before I die to accept this shell wane,

and in doing so feed its master.

I may fall in body, but my mind is eternally powerful,

my secret edge, the real courage in life.

Withered shall I be but my words as cutting as a new blade,

shall slither into minds removing the darkness,

word by word, thought by thought,

until the light explodes and illuminates the cloak of pretence.

Age is a cleaner passage of thought,

not governed by the angst of youth or the bias of power.

It is the calm and serene ability to focus in retrospect,

and deliver the freedom of reality to those more engaged in ego.

Age is as corruptive to the body as freedom is to a learned mind.

Thanks gustaw1981. Agreed, happiness is never the result of need or anything else- it's a state of mind. Thanks for reading and your comment.

I like your point. Freedom is an interesting concept. The more you know about it, the less you need it to be happy.
