A Face in the Crowd

By Tony DeLorger © 2013

A sad face,

lined with the a grievous life,

still, frozen in surrender,

to the hurt instilled,

the sour memories,

deep under skin.

Pensive,

lost,

barely alive,

breath involuntary,

rather than having purpose.

Yet below that furrowed brow,

a glimmer of hope,

a memory in shadow,

that once encouraged a smile,

warmed a heart,

and made a soul feel belonging.

What destined path

haunts this hunched creature,

what thoughts now fester,

or perhaps inspire,

or is life lost forever,

in a dark destined fate,

an empty, loveless life,

bereft of a single human touch,

parted from a kind word,

or a compassionate gesture.

In silence a man gives consideration,

to what has ensued,

what has robbed him of choice,

or what has in fact become choice,

in dreams alone,

is there a better life,

where comfort is possible,

pleasure not a memory,

a lost ideal,

out of reach.

He looks above,

wondering,

is there an end to it,

a benevolent God,

in death release.

But what if there's not,

just the cold earth,

worms burrowing into flesh,

and eternal sleep.

The sadness grasps hard,

and the face relents,

in the still of silent thought,

like a blanket,

keeping that life at bay,

hoping one day,

a single hope to find.
