A Family

He was just a teenager

She was a young woman

When the two met

And they got married

They had a baby daughter

Followed by one more

And then their first born son

Just a year later

They had a daughter again

Followed by a daughter

And in between a son

At last they had two daughters

The family of ten

was very, very poor

Both parents worked hard

To put food on the table

The small red house of theirs

Was filled to the borders

And a lack of food and clothes

Was a part of their lives

One day the father left his family

The wife was now alone

She did the best she could

To take care of them all

Some grew up

And moved away

From that little red house

They once called home

Some had gotten married

And some were still children

As the mother past away

All too early

In a disease called cancer

Their father had remarried

And had another son

After many years with them

He left his new family too

To move back home again

To see his eight first born children

Before he passed away

He now rests in peace

Next to his first wife

I visit them sometimes

And then I remember

My wonderful grandfather

As the kindest man on earth

Today I wish

I could have met

My grandmother too

Before she passed away

And left us all behind

She is missed by her children

People still talk about her

And I wish I had just one day

To meet this beautiful lady

Who took care of her family

She must have done a great job

I'm so proud of her

Even if we never met

Her blood runs in my veins

Made, I'm sorry you didn't get to meet your Grandma. My Grandma died from bone cancer when I was very young. This poem reminded me of her. Thanks for sharing. Voted up and beautiful.

Take care, Kelley

Made, It is sad that you didn't get to meet your grandmother. I liked the picture of the house that seemed to match your poetry. You expressed your family history in a beautiful way.

So lovely. I never knew my grandmother either, as she died when my mother was young from lung cancer. She used to roll her own cigarettes back then and there were no chemicals added. I know I missed out on knowing her, as if she were even half as sweet as my mother, her daughter, is, it would have been a beautiful thing to have known her, either way. I never knew my dad's mother either. So, I did miss out on a lot, but such is life. This is a precious story. In His Love, Faith Reaper

Faith Reaper, I'm sorry you didn't meet any of your grandmothers. This poem is about my dad's family. I knew my other grandma, my mom's mom, but she dies when I was little and suffered from Alzheimer's disease. I never really got to know the real her either. I think we have so much to learn from the elderly.

What a lovely piece to honor your grandmother even though you didn't get the chance to meet her.

I love your last two lines:

"Even if we never met

Her blood runs in my veins"

This is a pleasure to read. Up and sharing.
