A Father's Love - Poem for my Dad

Dad and Mom. Loving is what they do! | Source

I wrote this poem tonight (4/18/12) for my Dad, whose birthday is April 25th. He'll be 74 and has been my dad since he married my mom in 1964. I'm fortunate to have two living fathers. One who gave me his genes and one who helped form my soul. I have a relationship with both and love both dearly. But it's Dad who raised me and helped me become who I am today. Y'all are reading this poem before he. I wrote it tonight and am sending it in his birthday card.

I don't need to go into history, but my Dad is an awesome man! I hope you enjoy my heartfelt sentiment....

A Father’s Love

A Father’s Love

Is like

No other.

It differs from

That of

A sister,

Brother

Or even

A

Mother.

He’s there through

Success

Confusion

Doubt

And Uncertainty.

His love is so

Strong

It overcomes

All adversity.

He’s always proud

And stands

Strong by your side.

His belief in you

Fuels

Your forward Stride.

The love of a Father

For his Daughter

Is so very

Strong

It’s impossible

For her to falter

For

Very long.

My Dad is my

Strength;

He’s always

Been by my side.

It’s because of

Him

I’m now a Woman

Full of Pride.

Although this

Is written

For your special day,

To you, Dad,

I have this to say:

I love what you’ve

Given me

And I don’t mean things……

It’s because of you

My Heart

Always Sings.

I need you to know, Dad

It’s because of who you are,

That I will always love you

Higher than a Star!

Happy Birthday, Dad!

I love you!!

Absolutely beautiful poem. You are truly blessed to have an earthly father you love so much and who loves you so much too. I'm glad you mentioned the two living Fathers. In His Love, Faith Reaper

Tears in my eyes! Simply beautiful! What a wonderful birthday present for a man who did one hell of a job of raising his daughter. You should be proud, Sha, because I'm proud of you. On a side note, your mother was beautiful when she was younger. Not a bad set of parents if you ask me, and a great daughter!......love....bill

BTW, Bill, my mom is still gorgeous! Those pix were taken about 20 years ago. The only difference is Dad is now white-haired and Mom seems to have shrunk a bit, although we are both 5'2". But her face is the same. Some day I'll do something on her and post current pictures. She's still a fox!; who will also be 74 in June.

Brave - This is something he will cherish for the rest of his life. I'll bet he's read it so many times that the paper is starting to wear out. You're a good daughter who's love and admiration comes through so strong. Your words practically beam with pride for your wonderful Dad. Probably the same way his heart beams proud of you. Thanks for sharing this with me. I can so relate to your poetry, writings, thoughts and I have enjoyed what I've read so far.

As you state, you are a lucky girl for having "two" Dads but did you ever think how lucky they both are for you

Blessing and clear skies ahead.

bravewarrior profile image

bravewarrior 4 years ago from Central Florida Author

Wow,shiningeyes, what a compliment! No, I never saw it that way, but I know both dads love me immensely. My dad, for whom the poem was written, has shown it off to his sisters. My sister, who is of his loins, and my brother, of whom we share the same father genes, both were blown away by my words. I know my dad cried. He's a man who is not afraid to show his emotions. His life with my mom was and is all about bettering themselves. If not for his role in my life, I might not have become bravewarrior!

I just love the closes to your comments. They're uplifting and never the same!

I'm with 'shiningeyes', your two Dads are so lucky to have you. So many children who find themselves in a stepparent relationship are unable to form a bond - you are an exception and that speaks heaps of the amount of love within you and around you and it beams from this beautiful tribute. I bet you Dad was stoked with this poem. Thank you so much for sharing. My votes and best wishes to you BW.

Awesome heart felt poetry here Brave, I love how you embrace touching words towards your dad, it brings back memories of my own, and I also enjoyed reading the intro as well.

As a mother of a 20 year old I sense that you are proud of raising him as well, and so your life is complete, and this is all reason for writing with true inspirational words of wisdom that count a great deal for all of us.

Lovely job voted up and getting shared elsewhere for sure.

What a true classic - your dear dad and this lovely heartfelt hub presentation and tribute and so appropriate to read a day before Father's Day but then again everyday should be Father (and Mother's day) in my opinion.

My dad was my best friend (as was my mum) and I was a only child and we had a small family.

My dad was a veteran of World War II for 6 years as a Canadian soldier and he wrote 59 novels all unpublished in civilian life including a memoir of his war years.

Sending you warm wishes on this perfect summer's day from Colin and Tiffy and Gabriel at lake erie time ontario canada 11:38am

To tell you the truth I'm so busy trying to get my stuff published and sold and knowing my dad (who died at 74 from cancer back in 1992) he would have wanted it that way and I'm still in the land of the living and after I'm gone - that will literally be the end of the Stewart family.

So nice to share time with you today - please have a fabulous weekend and stay well and happy

Shauna - My eyes are filled with tears. You had to have 2 fathers in your life. One, alone would never be able to help 'form' the woman who has become the strong, wise, talented and beautiful woman you have become.

This is a very cool poem, and it is a good birthday gift. I have a question: why do you start new lines after only one or two words sometimes, or rather, what was your thought process? It is very interesting.

bravewarrior profile image

bravewarrior 2 years ago from Central Florida Author

Ben, I start new lines in order for the reader to read the way I intend. Breaks make you think and allow the words to be absorbed by the mind more easily. Poetry isn't like writing prose; you don't need to have complete sentences, nor do they need to be on one line. I space my words in order to create the rhythm with which the words sing in my head as I write the poem.

Ben Blackwell 2 years ago

The breaks. Ok, thanks.

I love how you prefaced the poem by stating that this dad in particular shaped your soul. Though genes are a great proportion of who we are, it is who we become that is impacted by how our tender souls have been nurtured. You have been a very fortunate person.

This is a beautiful homage to a good man. Voted up, up and away, beautiful!

I've just read a poem about Mother's love and now this one!

I really am MOVED! For me, it is only the parents who have true love for you.

A very nice poem!

Aimen, I'm always touched by the comments I receive for this poem. It was written from the heart. My dad is awesome and I just wanted him to know what an impact he's had on my life.

You may be right about our parents being the only ones who have true love for us. It is unconditional and runs very deep.

Thank you for your beautiful comment.
