A Haiku - Sacrifice
To love is to sacrifice self for the other.
The forest fire raged....
A Haiku - Sacrifice
She loved them so much.
The hot fire swept over her.
Her chicks? Safe once more.
Note:There are countless examples of extraordinary love which has involved extreme sacrifice dedicated unselfishly for the love of another, in combat, in disasters, even in the movies such as "Titanic." The example which came to my mind as I chose to write this Haiku, was the example of a bird, a nesting bird whose young chicks had recently hatched. A fast blowing forest fire, faster than any of her small chicks could run, was bearing down on her and her brood. Sheltering them in a shallow depression and beneath her own body and wings, the mother held her position as the consuming flames scorched and seared her dying body as the wall of flames swept past. A firefighter noticed her when the wall of flame had passed. He raised her body only to reveal why she had not flown to safety. The safety of her chicks had mattered more than life itself.

Sacrifice:
The meaning of Service....
- A Haiku - Service
Service to others, including our own family, is something we are each capable of doing within our own capacity and abilities. There is time for that. As precious as time is, living well is priceless.
