One Man........One Horse

Sweet dreams and flying machines do
nothing for me for long
Yet put me on a horse and the mood
lightens and my life becomes a song

Give the river to us
a dirt trail and watch us dissapear
Give us a day a week and we'll never look back
you'll never see us again .....if a year

I'll take that smell over all of them and the vision
the sounds the pleasure
Or a high mountain pass or
the base of a cliff to high to measure

In the end of my days when we tally
up the loss and the gains
I don't care can hold my share
as long as I hold the reigns

And when I dismount for the last time
the last load our souls will lug
Is when that horse bends around me
and gives a gentle hug

I ride a horse named kryptonite ...."Krypy" for short , and every time I dissmount him he bends his big head down around my shoulder and stays that way for a while , he loves to hug .....:-}

Very wonderful poem. I agree with you that getting on a horse you know and care about shuts out the world. As I have gotten older I have found dismounting is about the same but mounting is a whole new story.

the love between a man and his horse or any other animal is silent sometimes because what you see in their eyes in the same love they see in yours . great poem Ed.

Ed....What a wonderful description of your obvious love of your horse and "riding." Your affinity for it is clear and the sheer pleasure you get from traveling on the back of your best touching.

I do love horses, in general. To me, they are of the top 5 most beautiful and elegant animals.

The "hug" is especially sweet. This one made me smile....UP+++

i am breathless - but then - horses do that to me! And so does your writing, cowboy!

The smell of horses, and - quite frankly - horse shit - makes me the happiest happiest happiest girl in the world..(and happy too..)

Krypto sounds perfect - but - then - i'm a certifiable horse 'ho' (as in tally-ho people...PLEASE!! LOL)..

mmmmmm....i am so relaxed right now its almost as if i can smell (or hug) a horse...

Thanks Ed, (and friends can still agree to disagree - doesn't mean i don't love you just cause you're wrong..)

What a wonderful hub. I love horses while I never owned one but always had a heart for them. They are miraculous animals. I did get to watch two horses one time for a friend. I would put their bridles on and lead them out to the corral in the mornings and bring them back in to the stables at night. I love the smell, wearing my boots, the whole process! Just in that little job for one weekend I thought I was king of the world. Just the feeling of being near them, taking care of them was awesome.

Clydesdale/Thorobred... that was my horse Fancy's background. She was a BIG girl. We had a lot of fun, she was a trained English Jumper and I was a Western rider. A mismatch made in heaven. There is nothing like the smell of a horse... what a beautiful read, took me way back... my whole life I wanted a horse and when I finally got one I was living on my 'ranchette.' I'm not sure my son loved it as much as I did, as it was his job to muck out the barn. :) Thanks for the memories.
