A Piece of Myself is Missing

By Tony DeLorger © 2013

In the memory of the year gone by,

I have lost a piece of myself, and I'm not sure why,

and with all the heartache and strife untold,

there is now a distance with which time erodes.

But somewhere in that feast of dismay,

a piece of me went missing, as if thrown away,

perhaps I left it on a step in Florence,

the Amalfi shore or Alpine glacial torrents.

Perhaps it was standing in the Sistine Chapel

under Michael Angelo's works, in silence, baffled,

Leonardo's strokes, that indescribable smile,

it may have slipped from my hand, I was so beguiled.

Those never-ending stairs in the tower of Piza,

it could have blown away by the bells in the breeze,

or perhaps in the streets of old Pompeii,

it fell between stones in a wall decayed.

May be it blew away on the cliffs of Sorrento,

or on the pathway down to the streets of Positano,

perhaps I lost it from the lookout at Capri,

or from the launch that carried us to the caves on the sea.

The Roman ruins and the Colosseum,

all places I could misplace my being,

the flag waving in Sienna, the medieval vista,

I lost myself, in time and pizza.

This trip that went wrong, did so much right,

and I lost a piece of me at so many sites,

it's a wonder I am whole at all,

with me spread so far and wide and tall.

I suppose the only thing to do,

is go back and slowly collect my crew,

those pieces of my heart await,

in Italy, where ones heart and stomach awake.
