A Poem of Life

A Poem of Life

by John Hansen © 2015

Yesterday is in the past,

Today is here and now,

Tomorrow's promise still to come,

We need to dream somehow.

We cannot change the things we've done,

But learn from our mistakes.

Then put in practice lessons learnt,

Our future is at stake.

Sometimes troubles come our way

And fill our hearts with dread,

But if we're strong and persevere

We'll always get ahead.

We've loved and travelled, laughed and cried,

Grieved when loved ones died.

So celebrate the present time,

Face destiny with pride.

Optimism is the word

That needs to fill our mind.

Do not dwell on yesterday,

Just leave the past behind.

Love your family and your friends,

Show everyone respect.

Do not judge on race or sex,

And prayers do not neglect.

We must set goals that challenge us,

To strive and yearn for more.

Then tick each one off as they're done,

And in success we roar!

Our future is not preordained,

Though fate it plays a part,

And anything is possible

With an honest loving heart.

Beautiful, John. You've wrapped it all up here, like a lovely Christmas present, befitting this time of year when peace and love should abound even more than ever.

Hope all's well with you and yours, John.

Well, I definitely loved that. We need to take more time enjoying what is here right now and work on ourselves to make our futures better. I always believe we should remember the past to lear from it so we don't keep making the same mistakes. We should never dwell on the past, but look forward to the future. Excellent work, Jodah!

"Forgetting the past, we press on to the mark of the high calling of God." Your poem reminded me of this Scripture. I often in contemplating the day reflect on stupid things I've said or done... what I would give to take those words back but you can't unsay them.... what I would give to take those decisions and actions back but you can't take back anything. They stand in the memory as stains on a white carpet (bad memories amongst good memories). So I usually quote to myself this Scripture and it seems to ease the pain of stupid things I've done. Loved the poem. Thank you Jodah. Bob.

I agree Hari. We don't need to look for the complicated in every situation. Sometimes the simple things are the most powerful. Thanks for reading.

Hi Ann, thank you for comparing this poem to a Christmas present. I agree we should be spreading peace and love, not just now, but all year round. All is good in this part of the world, hope it is in yours as well.

Bob, that is a great piece of scripture to use as a life guide and I am glad my poem reflects that. We all say and do stupid things from time to time and wish we hadn't in hind sight, but what's done is done and we have to go forward learning from them. Thank you for your great comment.

Hi Jodah - Love this poem about living for today. I believe in being in the moment and try to teach it to my immediate family. No one can change unless he so desires, so I just do my own thing. Sometimes I have difficulty forgetting yesterday if it was a dreadful day, but I try really hard. Thanks for this poem that reflects my feelings. Blessings, Audrey Pinning

Audrey, I am so glad that I was directed to write this just when the message was needed by someone such as yourself. It is beyond my comprehension how this happens but it seems to occur quite often. People tell me the message in something I have just written is relevant to them at that moment. I never planned this. I wanted to write a short fiction story but was inspired to write this simple poem instead. Thank you for those kind words. Blessings.

I love this so much, John. You've expressed some basic truths with such clarity and respect. And "What a Wonderful World" is so dear to my heart, especially the Louis Armstrong version. The video's gorgeous illustrations of our Earth's beauty is warming and heartening.

The opening visual with John Lennon's quote is marvelous too, as are the other lovely pictures.

You've outdone yourself with this wonderful hub!

Thank you!

This one is filled with beauty and charm, Jodah. Some real soul-searching here as well.

On Tuesday night a poet did a 'running on the spot' performance at Poetry Cafe. It was all about what Sri Chinmoy calls Living in The Eternal Now. I believed the poet called it the Present Moment. It was an interesting performance, to say the least.

Wonderful poem and inspirational too. Peace Bro.

"Our future is not preordained,

Though fate it plays a part,

And anything is possible

With an honest loving heart."

I'm sorry if this sounds a bit sappy, but this last stanza brought tears. There is so much power in these simple words; all one needs to know and feel fulfilled of life. Beautifully done John.

Jodah profile image

Jodah 10 months ago from Queensland Australia Author

Genna, it doesn't sound sappy at all. In fact I was worried my poem may be construed that way, but instead it has been received very well. The words do seem to have struck a chord with many readers which I did hope for. Thank you for your kind words.

Magnificent poetry. It reminds me of a poem I had written almost 6 years ago.

In case you forgot how to smile;

Even then, for a tender while,

Leave behind your personal score

And live the moment – today once more.

If your eyes, for years, have remained dry

And yet your heart, like a gray sky,

Wants to burst into a heavy downpour;

Let it rain – today once more.

If you slept at nights without the gleam

Of starlit wonders or moonbeam;

Today, in the twilight, before the Sunset,

Allow yourself to have one more dream.

If what was to be said, has remained untold;

Before the arrival of winter’s cold,

Let your heart have its say

Before the silence – once more today.

None can presume what the future holds

Or how the enigma called tomorrow unfolds;

“Right now”, is all we have, to explore

Our oblivious selves – today once more.
