A Poem about forevers .......

We sat in my car a nineteen sixty six volkswagon beetle
in a warm july hay field talking about
forevever dreams
I was nineteen and she was seventeen
And she said lets go for a ride
and I said no come on
lets watch the sunset !

And she asked me as the sun dropped over
the pine treed ridge
Where do you think that sun goes
when it leaves here ?
I though for a moment and answered
Slowly
Just over that ridge is another
field and a another couple sitting
and waiting for the
sun to set and beyond that
another
and another
I turned to her in a slow
smile

And then she looked at me and said
Oh thats such a beautiful forever
thought and yet just when I thought
I had won her she reached over and kissed me
hard on the lips a long and passion filled
kiss and said
Let me drive !

And so as she drove the car around the field and I
dreamed of another kiss
That sun did set ........and darkness
came along behind it
And later as I dropped her at her house
and drove home I wondered
about forevers
and other forgotten promises

Ten years later she was killed as she
walked her children around town on
Halloween night by some
drunk driver ...........Such are the realities
of forever and so such are the
forevers of our youth
They are fleeting promises
sealed by unforgettable
kisses
And sunsets
unending

I love your thoughts in this poem, but was sad to hear about the girl/woman who was killed later...as it turned out to be her forever. Beautiful poem and heartwrenching. Vote up!

I was excited to read your poem and was feeling romantic and all until I reached the end...that's indeed, very sad. But then again, you are a wonderful poet and so even with its sadness, it still turned out to be a splendid read.

I love to see the sun rising but there's also something special when it sets in. Beautiful photo, Ed.

Up, beautiful, sharing and pinning.

Thank you dear , I have often thought of her over the years , we were but kids when we dated a few times , later she married a childhood sweety and had two children and we lost touch untill a few years ago when that happened . Ahh Life ....huh? Maybe thats why I live for sunsets . That photo I took a month ago out in front of my house ! Nice to see you sweety !......Ed

Oh my friend- this was such a romantic tale, yet my eyes are now misty from the heartbreaking ending. I do envision her enjoying her ultimate "beautiful forevers" and thank you for this emotional and impressionable poem.

Wow... I was really feeling the beginning of the poem and was thinking of romance and love and then you got me at the end. It makes your realize that sometimes forever has to end, but you will at least always have the memories.

Beautiful, Ed. I guess these ending to beautiful memories teach us that forever isn't what is mortal, but beyond it. That you remember the spirited teen she was and that everyone loved her - and she had a family - - all part of a realistic kind of immortality, huh?

Sadly beautiful way to illustrate our illusions of forever are just illusions and the moments all pass into memory. Sometimes they are sealed with a kiss and sometimes sealed more tragically. Wonderful poem. Voted up.

Barbergirl , And yet , maybe forevers don't end , maybe they remain always as small pictures in the photograph page book of our memories ! After all what is life but our yesterdays , todays and tomorrows all rolled into one . Hugs my beautiful friend !.......Ed

Nellieanna , You know I was in a doctors office a couple of years ago ,where two sisters of this woman worked and I asked if they were related to her , having the same last name . And "yes" they said , it started a small converstion about her ! Although i didn't share my memories of her , i told them I was friends with her when we were young , and shared a few memories , I hope it was some comfort to them !....I suspect you my dear lady were a very spirited teen !......:-}....Ed

I still am spirited. :-) hehe

Thanks for sharing that personal story! I'm sure it was a pleasure for her sisters to hear your first-hand memories of her.

Funny thing, seems like with the passage of years is a passage of other first-hand witnesses to one's memories! I was standing in line to get my car license renewed several years ago and struck up a conversation with someone in the line who had been a witness to the car-train accident which killed my sister and her family MANY years earlier. I never would have expected to ever meet anyone who was there at the time in a little one-horse town they were passing through in 1953. It was oddly like touching the scene where I wasn't even witness.

I understand comepletely Nellieanna , I was once at an archery tourement twenty years ago ,when a young man in his thirties asked me ........"is your last name ? ..... were you in anyway related to my friend Dougie ?".......and when I answered yes he went on to descibe to me how my brothers classmates recieved the news that my brother had been killed by a hit and run drunk driver in elementary school , but never knew how ! They were in the third grade at the time . And so I explained what I saw that day , and it brought him to tears standing there almost twenty years later , he explained to me that he and Dougie were best friends in their third grade class !.......Nellieanna it is a small world ! Is it not ! We are lucky to be touched by such beauty in life ! I think .....Thank you for sharing this ......Ed
