Importance of Books
Fun of reading
A World Without Books
E-books, e-reader, i-pad and i-phones have become common technology in recent years. Many people who never even read a single book in their life are now keeping these technologies in their pockets. The craze for books has been lessened to great extent. Even those people who were avid readers are now heard saying that they don’t get time to read. Kids, teenagers and adults all are hooked to these gadgets from day to night and from night to day.
Due to the availability of multitude of gadgets we have become use to of multitasking: one hand on texting from mobile other on the keyboard, eyes fixed on reading e-mails and ears in listening favorite music. At times we think that we are performing several tasks at a time but at the end it feels like we have absorbed nothing. The reason is that concentration has been lessened. People try to give time to each and every task at a time and in this process they cannot pick up which one to give importance and which one to ignore. As a result we are often wasting our time rather than getting things done. In this process we rarely get time to read from books, which require more time and concentration.
I some times feel that one day the world will be without books because the trend of reading is diminishing fastly. Though trend can diminish but the utility of book can never be replaced by e-reading or by other e-experiences. The pleasure of reading from book is in itself unique. When you are absorbed in a book the world around you seems to start and end with that book. There is a soul in the printed words and if the words become successful in grasping your attention you feel like possessed by a soul. Laying, sitting, walking, dreaming, and sleeping in every situation you think about it. The soul never leaves you until you finish reading the book and then the words will stay with you ever after when ever you are in the same situation and they will guide you.
I particularly enjoy the self-amusement book reading brings on your face; the tears that flow if the book is tragic; the smirk that shows that the villain has been defeated and the anticipation the anxiety that roots you to the spot.
Books contain a tactile value that can never be replaced by any other method of reading. When you go through lines and put your fingers on it, it seems like words have become life-like and you can feel their presence. Many times when we love a line in a book we rub our fingers through it as a sign of appreciation. It’s the kind of love that you have with your intimate friends and family members. If a book of choice is in your hand all of your senses start to work. Not only the tactile sense but the visual sense and smell too are involved when you are reading from a book. I remember I use to smell the aroma of books that are very old and like human beings it gives me feelings of wisdom and experience. It seems like the book too has gone through the test of time. I saved some of e-books on my PC but it never gave me that pleasure, not even a part of it and I quit reading from them.
Books are not only to entertain or to have better pass time but books have been our allies since time immemorial. The history that has been survived today in most part has been due to books and other written material. From writings on papyrus to writings on modern A4 paper the weight, size, texture and color of the paper can change but books can never be replaced by any other medium of reading.
Without books world will be as dark as it was several thousand years ago. The digital world can better inform you and can make you up-to-date but it can never increase your insight, intelligence and knowledge. A world without books will be a world without knowledge.
