A life with no reward

A life with no reward

Doing good in vain

For there is no reward

No grand prize

We all face the same demise

The wicked earn their earthly reward

While we do good in vain

We are mocked daily

Suffering an earthly pain

Daily toil with no gain

From succumbing, we must refrain

We share the little we have

Never to receive

Even though in need

My charity is in vain

My goodness well trained

Like a derailed train

A great affair for looters

Bit I am still sane

With excess there is nothing to gain

My goodness, there is no reward

Yet still moving forward

I put the train back on rail

And still move forward

For, I am no coward

Steaming towards the end of the tunnel

I look forward

There is no reward

My goodness is in vain

For, there is no reward.

Great poem. It certainly does seem that way so many times. Hopefully we have left a bit of hope or helped just one person or changed the world in some small way, may be what we don't even realize. There is always hope .

I think you speak for quite a few people with this darkly beautiful poem.

Respect suzette, yes there is hope. I guess we are not the ones who benefit but the recipient. They are the one who gets the reward.

Respect Billy. It was intended to be ecclesiastical and a lament. It is really a dark poem. I'm glad you saw it as beautiful.

Hmm a very well expressed poem and so much of thought here. Life can be dark at times.

You remember the old saying? "The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway." ? --Don't lose hope my brother and always, always give it your best shots just like how you've penned your sentiments here.

Beautiful write. Up and sharing.

I guess you don't believe in eternal life. That in itself is a great reward. :)

Respect DDEk. Thanks for the complement. It came out better than I expected. It was actually a free flow poem.

Respect CrisSp. it is good to do good. That's the whole point of the poem. Do good anyway.

Respect schoolgirlforreal. I do not expect any reward for doing good. It's just second nature. I would say its more of an agnostic expression.

It is funny how these acts of kindness seem to go unrewarded. I also am agnostic yet feel that somehow these acts help us to center ourselves in the universe. Jamie

Respect jhamann. Well said. The universe will work it out but our ego wants some sort of reward or promise of reward. Obviously it does not work like. Balance is very mysterious.

This is certainly a dark and sad poem, but it's also a powerful one. I love the sense that the writer is still moving forward despite their feelings about the nature of life.

Hi Rasta, dark but interesting poem. I know it often seems like doing good is all in vain and that there is no reward, and that those who do bad often seem to do better out of life. But believe me there is always a reward for doing the right thing, you just may not see it at the time. There is a video on one of my hubs "I Laughed a Smile" that illustrates how doing one good turn does make a difference. I recommend it to you. This was very well written though and food for thought, voted up.

This is a paradox bro Rasta, for in not seeking the reward, lies the reward. Still, nice thoughts and sharing. Peace!

Respect AliciaC. Moving along forward is the best option. Do some good and move along because there is no reward here. Maybe at the next stop. The cycles goes on.

Respect Jodah. Doing good does have a positive effect on those who you help. I guess that is the reward.

Respect manatita44. That's an interesting perspective. There may be a lot of ways to perceive this concept.
