DENA FERRARI, POET, HUMORIST, DARKSIDE GOOD WITCH
Interview Questions and Answers
AN INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR DENA FERRARI
1) How did you first become interested in writing?
I grew up with words and emotions all around me. My first poem, “Butterfly” was colored-penciled at the age of 4. I remember that my Mom was ironing when I showed her the paper with butterflies all drawn in the margins. She stopped what she was doing, read it and praised my work all the way to the old fridge. It was late spring and everything was in full bloom, ripe for the summer’s heat. Writing and drawing was what I liked to do. Writing improved….not so much my drawing….although I do have other ways of creativity!!
2) How long have you been actively writing?
I lived in times of strife. I learned quick that life wasn’t going to be easy for me. I dove into writing, not only as an escape, but for healing.
By the time I was 12 I was placed in a foster home. I had already suffered a lot of mental, physical and emotional abuse. Children back in the day didn’t have any rights. Did it make me bitter? Not then. I was an introverted child. My writing WAS my only solitude. Until the day I came home and found that my foster mother had tracked down all my scraps, papers, manuscripts and had it all already burning in the barrel when I came home from High School. She didn’t have 2 theme books….they were still in my locker. 5 years of my work…aflame. I died inside…that day….
I still have…those theme books. For many years I stopped writing…I became a Storyteller…A Keeper of Words, telling my children Bed Time Adventures…”That… Boys and Girls…is a story…for another time….” As I would have my son tell me a name and an item….and I would build a story from there. When my daughter started to listen…about the Fae…she told me that I should write it down. Yes, even from the mouths of babes…
3) Do you currently write as a profession?
No…I have a Broom…and I know how to use it!
I do have a book “out there”!! It is a wonderful book, I MUST say so, myself!!
I belong to an awesome Group on-line….come on and see what we are about!!
The Writers’ Alliance is always looking for more talent!!

4) If so, what titles have you put out and where can we find them?
My book, “Poems From The Hearth” can be found at www.lulu.com
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_u5WX5l5S0&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL Poems From The Hearth
5) Who is your inspiration?
I am inspired by many things. Not so much as “who”, I flourish through my love and wonders of Nature that surrounds me. Thunderstorms….the stronger, the better, are times that the ink flows and cascades…a waterfall of words tumble and poetry, short stories and novels are formed….although many of my work from 4 years ago….all reflect the love I have found since I met and married Peter. Ours was a Gift granted by the Universe. I put an “order” of the kind of guy I could truly call “the ONE for me”…and I made it the IMPOSSIBLE Dream…
The Universe, granted my dream…and created a Reality. I haven’t had a chance to breathe ever since!! We are each caught in THE moment….of Pure Love.
The second half of my life…is awesome! As for Inspiration…I gather all I need from the Mother…Each Season grants a new adventure. Each day a special one. Each moment…is priceless.
6) Who's writing style does your work most resemble?
My own…I am unique and individual as I can get! My style is Mine….I am totally....outside the box...
7) Do you write on a schedule?
Schedule? Yeah, right. I work hard and come home weary. Writing is what I do…when I have THAT special time to be able to just slow down and sit. I enjoy writing. I love to challenge myself always.
8) Do you write in one particular place?
No. I don’t know of ANY writer who hasn’t had that THUMP hit you. The Muse is relentless when She strikes. I have been caught in traffic and suddenly get a line that I MUST remember….since then…I have bought a small recorder. Don’t know how to work it….yet….but I will!!
I keep a pad and pen by the bed….dreams are inspirations as well….sometimes scrawling “something” down…in the dark…and have to read the dents since that pen…doesn’t work!!
It has since been replaced!! Always make sure you have ink…to write!!J
As for the serious writing, I am plugging away, Hunt-and Pecking at some keyboard trying to get as much thought out before the steam runs out. I sometimes just can’t….stop!!
9) Do you write from home?
The serious writing, yes. I have been caught by the Muse in other places as well…Depends on what I see or what has caught my attention. Napkins and brown paper towels from old restrooms are sometimes the only paper available when I am backhanded by the Muse. My Husband and I live on 50 acres of pure woods with our Fur babies…3 Dogs (don’t tell them that they are). Our Girls romp freely ahead of us as we walk the land. So, being that these hills and valleys of the land is part of our home….you could say “yes” to that question.
10) Do you prefer to work in a quiet environment?
Depends….sometimes I block out anything and everything…
Sometimes it’s during a storm….love the thunder!! (I usually have to shut down the computer/laptop as we get power outages pretty easily. Then it’s a grab the pen and paper time. I just bought an old Smith-Corona Typewriter. I had one back in the times before my foster mother burned my writing. It was well used and well loved. It’ll be great to have that one ready….when the Muse strikes!!
Sometimes the Fur Babies want attention….especially when they see you just “sitting” and they love their pets and loves!
Other times…it’s the bird song and the wind…
Sometimes Peter keeps me company. He loves to see me write!
11) Do you listen to music when you write? If so, what type of music do you listen to and why?
Music...yes…sometimes….I love Celtic melodic music as well as anything that is beautiful and smooth.
I listen to Celtic/ Classical/ Yanni/ Enya/Enigma/ Filk/Folk/Ballads/Guitar/Piano/ actually….anything that is Instrumental…since any music will just set me off…and my words….flow…
12) Are you an avid reader?
I read…mostly Metaphysical/ Nature/Herbs/ Gardens/ Wildlife/Cookbooks and then….there’s the craft books!!
13) Who are your favorite Authors?

I have quite the collection...geared for the child within to enjoy...
Fairy Tales from all cultures are what I really enjoy!!
Hans Christian Anderson, the Brothers Grimm and any….Mother Goose Nursery!
If it's just for reading....with loads of info...

JRR Tolkien...any and all...
Katherine Neville...."the Eight"...the Circle...

14) What is your goal in writing?
To have a published book!! Yup!! THAT has been a Dream…also a Reality!
I am presently working on several books…
3 are Fantasy Adventures….
I also write Children’s Bedtime Adventures…and have a few of them started on the computer.
One is dealing with the metaphysical aspect of who I am….
15) Would you rather write a book that sells millions of copies, but have it be "Celebrity Fluff" - or write an award winning novel that no one reads? And why does it matter?
I think I would like to write for the Children and young adventurers…I am not into the whole…writing a book just because it can make the money. If I can reach….just 1 child…or person who would love to see more…I am writing…to them…the Dear and Gentle Reader!
16) Who was your first character? And how do you feel about that creation now?
I have many characters….and each is a special to me as the next. Each one was chosen to become the destined personality of whatever they are a part of. I can never change them!!
I have a story...long since burned...that had a ghostly character...the short story...was entitled..."The Ghost of Sarah Mays"....hmmm...I should really rewrite what I can remember...might even improve on the original!!
17) Should a sentence EVER start with "but" or "and" ?
I try to stay clear of sentences that start that way…
BUT…sometimes…it shows up…
And…what else can you do?? BUT go with the flow…
I know, I know…THAT was wrong…but…it’s a great way to display!!
18) If you couldn't ever write again, what would you be doing?
Never write? I’d have to be deceased to have THAT happen!!
19) How long did it take to write your first book?
My first book? It took only a few months…all the while writing poetry and short prose…and that was all destroyed….
My novel I am presently working on…has taken time to research and to get the several chapters started. I have couple of Dear Friends willing to take the time to help it be hashed…I am grateful for the critiquing that they have done. Good friends are always kicking me to continue!! Thanks, Peter, Chad, John....
20) Have you ever competed in the National Novel Writing Month event? What do think about such events?
NANOWRITE….I tried that once…but work got in the way….
I didn’t like my results either since it seemed that it wasn’t being true to content as well as quality.
I know that there are times that THAT great piece HAS to be on a TIMELY basis…Only then…is it really worth it.
21) How do you feel about Writers Groups or organizations?
I feel that Writers Groups are great! I belonged to one for about 7 years!
22) Do you belong to any writer's organizations?
I recently just stepped down from a long running group of awesome talents.
I had been their Vice-President for many years. Distance and time made it harder to continue.
The group that I belong to on-line is Terrific!!
I have written many a poem with this group and each week is a new challenge…and each time…is a wonderful time spent….especially when you are with a great group!
Pat Simpson is a very dedicated lady with everything you could need as a friend and publisher!!
The Alliance is a wonderful group of talents….from all around the world. Each has a message, each has a wonderful way with words…and each is very special and dear to me.
Bob Hewett is part of that group. I love that twinkle in his eye! I knew Bob when he went to the Writers Guild from NC before his move out of state. He and his bride are just awesome!!!!
23) What is the longest amount of time you have spent writing in one sitting?
I spent 3 and a half days…just getting up to stretch, eat, and continue….
THAT was during a trying time and I just dived into my writing…..
27) Do you use outlines or flowcharts to help you map out your plots?
I do a fair amount of research for some of the skills I don’t know about….like sheep shearing.
I would like to bring the Reader into the story….as each page flows from one till the next. I love to capture the hearts and imaginations…and send the Spirit within….soaring!
I pretty much know where I am heading. Sometimes there’s that pesky detour…and then…it jells and the flow is all-consuming!
Soooo….Come closer my Dearie....A Tale for you today One I’m sure you’ll remember...Just not quite....the same way!
