Action comics no.1

The history of the comic book has a big part in the American culture. They have existed since the beginning of the twentieth century and they occupy an important place in the American culture. Nowadays, many Hollywood producers rely on comics to make their next blockbuster movies. In the past years, we saw many creations of Stan Lee go to the big screen. If one dissects the history of comics, he will discover that in the beginning, a comic book was something yet simple with art as easy as it comes. With time, colors are now more vivid, drawings more detailed and the characters seem to come alive.

Among the best comic artists, we find Alexander Ross (more commonly known as Alex Ross). He is considered to be one of the best painting artists. He started his work with the Terminator: The Burning Earth in 1990 and, since then, he made several covers for Marvel and DC. Among his finest works, we can find the Kingdom Come series, Universe X, Spider-Man, Superman and many other prominent figures from Marvel and DC. Alex Ross paintings are among the best ever done.

Some of the best covers and paintings of Alex Ross

The collection of his paintings is very large so I will select a few that, in my opinion, are his best covers and paintings. What I like from his work is the incredible detail he puts into the characters. I picked below some of the best artwork he made through the years. Of course, some of his key works will not be here as I will be listing only ten that are my personal favorites. If you want to share with me an undeniable cover or painting that you think has its place here, let me know! I don't know from what comic book these covers are from. I will add the ones I know.

Superman!!
Superman!!

Superman gets ready to fight

I definitely think that Alex Ross draws Superman the best (maybe along with Jim Lee). This picture is yet simple and that may be the main reason I like it. It has a black background with Superman swelling his chest and getting ready for battle. What else can you ask for!

Superman vs Bizarro

Kingdom Come: Superman

This is one of my favorites. From the Kingdom Come series, we can see Bizarro fighting with Superman with red smoke surrounding them.

This is the art cover for the first issue of the series (January 2009)

Let the showdown begin!

Good vs Evil

Can you name them all? In this piece of art from Alex Ross, it's the heroes versu the villains of the DC world. Detail is incredibly present on the characters. The clouds turning from orange to black announce us one of the greatest fights yet to happen in the comic books universe.

  • Villains (the ones I know):

Lex Luthor, Captain Cold, Dark Adam, Poison Ivy, Joker, Bizarro, Scarecrow, Black Manta, Gorilla Grod, Joker.

  • Heroes (the ones I know):

Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Martian Manhunter, Captain Marvel (Shazam), Plastic Man.

If you know some others I did not mention kindly tell me!

Justice League of America
Justice League of America

To serve and protect

I like this one simply because it looks like a real picture. They are so well painted that they look like models posing for a picture. The main members of Justice League of America (JLA) are present on this wonderful piece of art.

I don't think this is from any comic book cover. It might be a wraparound cover perhaps or a lithograph?

Black Adam
Black Adam

Can you feel the rage of Black Adam!!?

Black Adam is the predecessor of Captain Marvel. He uses powers from ancient gods to give him incredible speed, strength and wisdom. He is one of the most dangerous foes of Captain Marvel and watching this painting scares me only by watching his face. Man does he look angry.

Batman is...where?
Batman is...where?

Whatever happened to the caped crusader?

Batman is an icon in the DC universe. The publishers will never kill this character in a million years but this cover is beautiful and anxious at the same time. What would happen to Gotham City if Batman was to disappear? The Joker and all the other Batman foes would rule the city without a doubt. The look on Alfred's face tells it all. The art of Batman by this artist is very well made.

This is the cover to Batman No.686.

Superman at its finest

Hi and welcome to Metropolis

Everybody knows Superman. Ever since the Superman movies in the 80's, all the kids dream of being like Superman in his red cape. He is synonym of power, speed and security to the people of Metropolis. In this painting, Clark Kent watches over his city with the sun on his back. Firm fists to impose his supremacy as the supreme protector of Metropolis and nothing in the horizon but a bright blue sky with some yellow clouds. I simply love this one.

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel

I am not very familiar with Captain Marvel. I have not read any of his comics but while doing my research on Alex Ross, I stumbled on this one. For as long as I have been reading comics, I was never tempted to read these and I don't know why. I might just pick up a copy anytime soon. In this portrait, Captain Marvel stares down with a little smile on his face while cracking his knuckles. He is now ready to fight.

I don't know if this is the cover of a comic, I did some research and did not find anything related to it. Maybe it's from the Kingdom Come series.

Hulk Smash!
Hulk Smash!

Is he man or monster?

Hulk was created in 1962 by Stan Lee. Two movies recently hit the theaters and we can see the amazing size of Bruce Banner in the two movies. He is one of the biggest characters in the Marvel universe (ok maybe besides Galactus). His size is well portrayed here. I mean just look at the size of his hand. Do you know anyone with hands as big as his? Please don't answer Shaquille O'Neal...

The Last phantom

The Last Phantom

I have no idea who this guy is. But when I found it and knew it was done by Alex Ross I had to put it here. The incredibly detailed face is mesmerizing and with blood dripping from his forehead one could wonder what he does for a living. I think they made a movie in the 90's but the reviews were not so great.

Do you have something to tell me?

This hub would not be complete without eh...a feminine touch. It's Red Sonja, yet another character I am not familiar with. But I don't need to know much about her to appreciate the beauty of it. What I like the most is the way her hair stands out from everything else. Well maybe besides something else.

This is a lithograph by Alex Ross.

You just revived an aging attachment to comics. These graphics are full of emotion telling unknown stories. One could write a hub just on one picture alone. You did well with captioning the jest of each. I am heading to a comic book store now.

Cool article. I prefer his DC work the most, but the look in that Red Sonja pic is pretty intense. The way he had Captain Marvel smile in Kingdom Come when he faced off against Supes.

Great Hub. Big fan of the comic book movies, like Superman, Spiderman and Watchmen. Really great drawings, they really do bring life to their characters.

Helen Bolam:

Thanks! I myself am a big fan of comic books but I lost some interest in the past years. I try to keep up with the latest series and, of course, with the latest movies.
