Alice Revisiting Wonderland

Alice was going back

Going back to her childhood home

Looking forward to seeing the places she knew

Longing to see her old friends in wonderland

Could she do it once more?

Would she see the white rabbit?

Would anyone remember her?

Was the old park still the same?

Stepping off the train

Nothing was the same

The train station looked drab

The people old and tired

She stepped out onto Main Street

And saw that most everything was different

The places she remembered

Were no longer there

Alice reached her old home

The house shuttered the garden overgrown

Next door looked like the Addams family home

Nothing was the same anymore

Alice opened the door

She saw shadows of yesterday everywhere

With a sigh she decided

To look for her friends and wonderland in the park

The big oak was still there

The lake was too

There were a lot more bushes

And flowers were growing everywhere

Alice sat down

Her back against the oak

Looking across the lake

She tried to remember wonderland as it had once been

Then it happened again

Only this time Alice heard the flowers in the park singing

She jumped up from the bench

To join them

But Alice found that they didn’t remember her

And she looked about for the rabbit hole

There was none that she could find

She wandered down toward the river

To discover that the Mad Hatter and the Dormouse

Were laughing and having tea

They looked at Alice

And she was amazed to hear

That the Mad Hatter shouted, ”It’s the Unbirthday girl!”

So she sat down to join them for tea

Alice looked all about

Waiting for the White Rabbit

To come running by

But he was nowhere to be seen

Soon she tired of the Unbirthday song

And left the gang to their celebrating

As she ventured farther into the park

She saw a thin stream of smoke

It was the caterpillar and his water pipe

He was such a sorry sight

All tied up in his little legs

His head high in the smoke rings above his head

Alice politely inquired

If he had happened to see the White Rabbit

The caterpillar shouted,”The White Rabbit you say! The White Rabbit is begging in the Town Square!”

Alice rushed out of the park

She ran out onto Main Street

Then ran toward Town Square

And yes, there was her friend the White Rabbit

In a top hat and a vest that had seen better days

Begging for carrots just for today

He was surprised to see Alice

And quite annoyed

The carrots he said were for the Queen

And he must be there today

Then Alice heard a snicker and looked up to see

The Cheshire cat sitting atop the statue of the Mayor

It never changes it’s always the same

Was what the White Rabbit declared

And the Cheshire Cat’s grin grew wider

Till Alice only saw the grin

So frustrated was she

Then she shrugged

And dismally walked back to the park

Wonderland wasn’t really wonderland any more

Perhaps she was too old now for such things

Two little boys were playing ball

They looked for all the world

Just like Twiddle Dee and Twiddle Dum

And Alice began to smile

As they started to sing and dance

Upon the lake

Came bobbing the Dodo

Alice decide that if this was what wonderland had become

She might as well join the Mad Hatter and the Dormouse

Have some tea and celebrate an Unbirthday

It was at this moment

That Alice felt a shove

She opened her eyes

And saw an old lady

Who inquired if she was alright?

Alice had fallen asleep

Right there by the old oak tree

She rubbed her eyes and jumped up

Feeling quite foolish as much as she had done once before

Alice left the park

She looked about Main Street

No White Rabbit and no Cheshire cat to be seen

Then she saw what she hadn’t noticed before

A new restaurant had opened

The sign said – The Queen’s Diner

So being hungry Alice went inside

There was a fat lady behind the counter

For all the world she looked like the Queen of Hearts

Even her smile was the same

As she said,”Come in my dear. What will you have?”

A little man was running about waiting on tables

He looked for all the world like that little king

A young man came to seat her

He had buck teeth and made Alice think of the White Rabbit

If lunch hadn’t been as good as it was

Alice would’ve thought she had lost her mind

Being a little girl it was enough to believe in wonderland

Now she doubted everything she saw

Back out on the street Alice looked up to see

An announcement placed across Main Street

The sign said – Mad Hatter Days

Get the hat of your choice

That made Alice smile and chuckle

She made her way back home

The couple next door was waving to her

They looked for all the world

Like Morticia and Gomez

Across the street Herman Munster

Was mowing his lawn

Alice knew it was time to put the house up for sale

And return to reality

Wonderland just wasn’t what it had been before

Wonderful. Your words snuggled up next to my own faded wonderland, and some wonder why people move to Florida or Arizona, or somwhere else when they retire. :)

Wow, I loved, loved, loved this! You are very creative once again. It is funny, as last weekend I had taken my granddaughters to the Performing Arts Center to a Mad Hatter's Tea Party, and they loved it. Great Hub. Enjoyed this to start my day, and it is so true, one can never go back home, as it is so different once we are grown than the memories from how it was when we were children. Beautiful poem and so profound. When I returned to my 'wonderland' 30 years after I've left it, I was completely disgusted. Everything had changed and in fact deteriorated. Ever since then I don't even mention the name of the place that was once my 'wonderland'. Strange, why did it deteriorate? A proof that all people are not creators and developers; that most people are in fact parasites, like grasshoppers devouring everything and all until the day they die.

Excellent poem voted up and awesome :)

Some days when I get up and see my shirtless 400 pound neighbor waddling to the mail box, I sometimes wonder if he belongs to the Adams family if I am in Wonderland. This is such a creative tale, well told, and lots of fun! Very enjoyable.

Yes, Rasma, I agree to all the others had to say, but it came as a sad realization- that things have changed and wonderland is no more. We can never again fall down the rabbit hole and have those mad adventures! Alice has always been my most favorite character- and the first book I bought (actually given to me by my uncle) from a book fair. Voted up.
