It's not something usually done
swinging while walking
a kind of cantor like
pitching and walking in a small sail boat
or the way the cowboys in western films stroll,
you could say I looked a little stupid
on my way home at 2 AM
spinning my car key around my fingers
smiling, for apparently no reason.
Across the street, noise from a popular bar
people stood outside smoking cigarettes,
waiting in line to get in
looking at me funny
my jaunty walk
not drunk, obviously, but also
not quite right in the head
to be grinning just that way
at this time at night
not on the phone
not listening to music
no headphones in sight.

He stopped then was smiling.
