Escaping Time

Alone in this dark place

I tremble, I shake

My very essence quakes

I'm not sure how much more I can take

Darkness falls, yet I remain awake

So much potential bound tightly to the stake

Cold, alone, and stuck firmly in this place

As the world stops, defying the laws of time and space

I can only find small, temporary escapes

I'm in constant battle with an imp that I can't shake

I appear strong, I appear to flow forward with grace

Only strong enough to endure the battles, not enough to tilt the war or make it break

I draw strength from others who allow me to see into their souls and accept my embrace

Still darkness falls and my mind begins to race

Something claws at my chest as a tear rolls down my face

I just want to get away but a rescuer doesn't come and weakness breeds mistakes

I resist the urge to rip the clothes off my skin or flee from this place

I resist the thoughts in my mind that are temporary and fake

I accept my weaknesses and temporary lapses of faith

Alone in this dark place

I sit still and I patiently wait

This beating will end when the sun shines again upon my face

I try not to dwell on all the time that I would waste

Waiting for the day or a soul to pause this war and help restore my faith

I try to grow accustomed to my new and selfish ways

As I use those around me to distract and delay me from what awaits

And the time torments as slowly it sways

While I sit here alone in this dark place.

Such torment in this poem, such a struggle, a battle, "flowing forward with grace," "drawing strength from others..." not defeated, waiting for faith to be restored. Faith in the narrator's self, I surmise, from a dark and depressingly dark place.

It has great action and agitation for the reader as well. Excellent!

Yes Xstatic, never defeated but none can always achieve victory. Such is the nature of balance I suppose. For all the hours spent shining in the sun, darkness will eventually come. Still, the flame that burns within is never more beautiful than when surrounded by darkness.

I love your visits. Thank you for finding this piece and commenting. You are very much appreciated.

Well crafted and much appreciated. I know of a place so dark few can bear it, including a daughter.

Mhatter - I can't imagine the life lessons your frame has been forced to endure. If there is any light that can guide your daughter thru darkeness, it would be yours.

Very dark , indeed. Seems almost palpable with a hopeless quality to the writing. The music was a good find. Very apropos.

Take care and be creative.

Nice to see you here Cyndi. I appreciate the visit so much. I really prefer pieces of hope and strength but great light is often balanced with an equally great darkness.

Good afternoon Lissette - I so do love this title and the words which follow are poetically perfect - I admire the dark brooding quality of your writing here and you have crafted a work of art . Perhaps I should call you the female Edgar Allan Poe.

Sending you warm wishes and good energy from Colin and his cats at lake erie time ontario canada 2:17pm

WOW Colin! You and several other readers have showered me in kind words before and I always feel embraced and extremely grateful and appreciative but this... It is euphoric! I can't even express. Poe is a big deal to me. A favorite. The comparison might just cause my heart to stop. Thank You.

It's like you're writing about me. Even when things around me are good and I should be happy, I find myself in this dark place. My darkness comes from a lack of faith and wondering is life really worth living.

Everyone sees their darkest days at some point. Whether life is worth living or not is something entirely different. A long time ago, I learned that life was something that could only be defined by me. I removed all false obligation and expectation and found that the life that I create is the only one that would be worth living but that meant letting go of everything that I was taught to desire for a 'successful' life. Not the easiest road but the most rewarding.

It makes me angry and upset that you are alone in a dark place. I wish there was something I could do.

Thank you for your visit and kind words Kidscrafts. My life has had dark and light. My spirit reflects light but I embrace the dark. One can't exist without the other after all...

I love that you appreciate the pictures and musical pairing. It is something I spend a lot of time on.

Hello Daniel. That you care enough to be angered by it is more than most can do. I am not afraid of the dark. I embrace it and am comfortable there. I have found myself within it several times and there is beauty there. These depths are hard but they do not last long. I am not consumed. No worries. They come and go for me like they must for you and all the others.

This was the best song I could find.

I suppose it can be easily interpreted in light of a brother-sister relationship.

Do we strike a light or curse the darkness? You've laid out that choice we make every day - looking back weakens faith, but it is so difficult not to do that sometimes. I felt someone who has experienced major mourning in your candid verse. Grief is a supernatural problem as the protagonist in the narrative is experiencing, and requires a supernatural solution; that faith in God is enough to keep one going on a daily basis, and it may sound trite, but things get better; lean on those around you; let someone carry you for a while even. Some days feel like one is only just managing to tread water, but drawing strength from where you can get it helps. How one overcomes can define the soul.

Thank you for sharing your writing on here.

With Kind Regards,

R.Q.

God knows I have been there in the past... You have an awesome way with words and expressing your emotions... I lost much of my poetry during a move some time ago, but I'm determined, in Jesus' name, to move the mountain and write again... I've just begun to share... The release is powerful... God bless you...

Voted up and shared...

Nice to meet you Motherofnations... your choice in names inspires great stories in my head. It is sad to hear that you have lost your poems. That has to be my favorite part about hubs, I can move, age, change, or even pass and the words will be hidden away here as long as I do not take them down.

I'd like to join you in this dark place if you don't mind. Not because I think you need company but because I need company. She was a sister to me in high school. And only a year my senior.

I am sorry to hear that Daniel. These places were never intended to become permanent residences but everyone gets to visit. Unfortunately some come more than others.

I can only imagine what pain her husband is going through right now as well. It's hard for us men to take care of you women. We need you guys to take care of us.

These dark places were once frightening but when we enter them, we can always surround ourselves with friends. I'm glad I have you as a friend when I go into the dark place. I hope to also be supportive to you as best I can but please let me know when it gets uncomfortable for you.
