Human

The video below is an audio recital of the poem 'Human', by Aiysha Jebali. Lyrics found below. Thank you for listening and reading.

Our hearts have grown cold...

At what price have our souls been sold?

Deep down we must know

that this robotexistence

is worth but a sixpence.

What ever happened tosensitivity?

To empathy?

Sure, so long as our consumerism tank isn't runnin' on empty.

In this era

what does it mean to feel their terror,

their pain?

To make us never look at things the same?

Our world situation is more than just 'a shame' -

it's insane!

We walk by -

it's simply not humane!

To all man and woman:

What does it truly mean to be a human?

Your eyes are closed

to those

you can't bear to see.

Your ears are deaf

to the sound of the children left -

the starving orphans facing death.

Correct me if this is just an assumption,

but due to our economic corruption

and our constant capitalist consumption -

is it truly a shock

when you hear that a child dies with each tick

eachtock?

We take from the earth

all it gave birth

but yet we turn and wonder and curse

at that which is finite,

this damage we can never reverse!

However,

despite NGO's greatest endeavor,

lack of basicsanitation

kills so many in an endless rotation.

And, though you may see it on the TV,

do you ever fully grasp the reality

of how many lives taken by preventable diseases like TB?

Your eyes are closed

to those

you can't bear to see.

Your ears are deaf

to the sound of the children left

starving orphans facing death.

Seeing an advert isn't enough.

We can't comprehend what makes their lives so tough.

In my head I scream:

'Am I the only one left wishing for our people to redeem?'

In my mind

I try to find

a way to remind humans how it feels to be kind.

To truly care and give love

like that which we're sent from above.

My energies may never be enough

but I won't give up!

I will wake my people.

I will kill this mechanical evil!

I will do my lot,

so I can at least look back and know that I fought

for us to ditch this feeling of auto-pil-ot.

And, be humane,

as we should always remain.

Your eyes are closed to those you can't bear to see,

Your ears are deaf to the sound of the children left

Starving orphans facing death.

And so, I'll ask you again,

my ladies and gentlemen.

To all man and woman:

what does it truly mean to be a human?

I was inspired to write this poem by my experiences in India. It became apparent to me that after a short time there we were becoming desensitized to the heart wrenching poverty and for me, that was a real reality check. And, when I returned to the UK and spoke to people about my experiences - the response I got just shocked me to my core. People cared but because they cared they didn't want to listen - their attitude was that they would rather not know and if people don't know what's going on around them - how can they fix it? Our actions here directly affect those in developing countries and likewise do theirs affect us here. Education is vital and I mean that on more than just an academic level. It really upset me and so I wrote this poem which may seem a little harsh but sometimes you have to be to make your point heard and hit home. I hope you can take something from it.

This is very important hub.Priceless thought from caring heart.

In so many times I realized people have tendency to closed their heart to painful story like this because they do not want to care. Because care will only give them pain and pain in this kind of case, will be hard to erased. That is why they blocked everything so they can live their life without worries too much. This is an ugly part of human mechanism. But Sis, trust me this, you are not alone. In this world, even not many, there are people who cares and dedicating their life to work on it. You and I, just need to be that kind of person and stop worrying about anything else. ^^

Great work! ^^

@Dienda - You are absolutely right! It is that alone that make us human. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I hope you will keep reading! Thanks again!

@Freya - I know, I've done a lot of charity work and I will continue to do more. Love is free, why not show it? I'm glad to meet someone with the same thoughts! Thanks you very much for taking the time to read my poem :)

@Cresent - Thank you very much, the vote up is highly appreciated! I've been here a while but I really find it hard to get people to actually read my work, so I very much appreciate it when people like yourselves take the time and more than that - actually enjoy it! :D

@smb - Thank you very much! I willing be editing this hub just to add the audio of my recital. I hope you catch that too, half the power of lyrical poetry is in the hearing of it - well, that's my opinion anyways :P
