Another New Year's Eve - Hope for the New Year Poem

Another New Year's Eve
Another New Year's Eve | Source

This is the worst.

The street is empty and cold

as my key lets me in

to the hum of the fridge.

My heels click on the tile.

The end is so near as

the clock slowly ticks.

Just minutes away,

the ragged calendar

from this year still hangs.

My nose takes it in--

the musty, familiar

smell of the fireplace,

the wood and the cat.

There is dirt in the air.

My breath is uneven.

The clock is so slow.

Nobody is stirring.

I lean toward the window

and the glow from the church.

The tall and stately cross

catches my tired eye.

I lift my head and

wipe my damp cheeks.

I step outside.

Eeeesh! Did any one yell "Stop! It so not worth it?" Poems like these are unfair. You make me sad and lonely.

Good job excellent piece

How very beautiful and very touching. Sad yet full of hope. I really enjoyed it. I personally like a quiet New Year for reflection but I understand so many people have mixed emotions this time of year, which you really captured. Great poem, and great video, thanks so much for sharing it. Voted up & beautiful.

You captured the feeling of nostalgia the end of the year sometimes invokes. As humans we are always looking for markers in our lives. The end of one year makes us feel a sense of loss for things undone, things unsaid, relationships that withered for whatever reason.

Conversely, anticipation of a brand new year and a chance for new beginnings, hope and renewal are many times inspired by our religious beliefs. Voted up.
