Attempts to Kill a Woman Who Doesn't Die! By Nizar Qabbani-Poems

As the title suggests, this is an exquisite poem by the great poet Nizar Qabbani. It shows the lover's addiction to his beloved and also the hopless and useless break-up attempts...

The Poem

I promised not to love you

But I cowered against the big decision

I promised not to come back……but I came

I promised not to die missing you……but I died

I promised a lot

And I decided repeatedly to resign from your love

But can’t remember that I did!!!

I promised to do things bigger than me

What the newspapers will write about me morrow?

They surely will say that

I went mad

They will surely write that

I committed suicide…

**********************************

I promised not to be weak

But I was…

And not rhetorise poetry of those eyes

But I wrote…

I promised not to…and not to…and not to……..

But when I discovered my foolishness

I laughed……….

************************

I promised not notice your hair

When it crosses in front of me…

But when it surged like night on the ground

I shrieked…

I promised to ignore your eyes

No matter how much I miss them….

But when I saw them drizzling over me like stars

I exhaled…

***********************************

I promised not to write any love letter for you

But in spite of me…

I wrote…

I promised not to be in the same place that you’re in…

But when I knew that you’re invited for dinner…

I went.

****************

I promised not to love you…!!!

Where? When? In any day did I promise?

Ha… I’ve been lying…

Thank God I’ve been lying…

********************************

I frigidly & stupidly promised

To burn up all the bridges behind me…

And I decided (secretly) to kill all my women

And I declared war against you…. (Stupid me)

But…when I saw your peaceful hand

I got shy…

*************************

I promised not to call you at night…

Not to think of you when you’re sick…

Not to get scared for you…

Not to give you flowers…

But……………….

I called at night in spite of me…

I sent flowers in spite of me…

I promised not to…and not to…and not to…

But when I discovered my stupidity….

I laughed…

*************************

I promised to slaughter you asunder fifty times

But when I saw your blood covering my clothes…

Only then I was sure that…..

It’s me whom I killed…

I promised to end up everything between us

But when I saw your tears

Falling away from your eyes

I got confused…

And when I saw your luggage on the floor

Only then I realised that

You can’t be killed easily

Because…………………..

You’re my country…

My tribe…

My unborn poem…

My books & rides…

My childhood…

********************************

I promised to cancel your eyes

From my memories book

But…

I didn’t know that I will cancel my life!!!

I promised not to love you…

What a foolish I am?

What did I do to myself?

Thank God I’ve been lying…

""Sure portlorraine, they (women) have great power and we (men) can't exist without them :) and I won't ask you :)""

Oh you are the first person to admit that LOOOL

by nizar has lots of great poetry i have to say so esp their interpretations in Arabic :D Totally love the poem and as Ralwus he could be speaking of his country, Arab poets tend to mix lots of topics together and encrypt them in their writings. Thanks for sharing my friend :D

I'm now unsure if he was writing of his love of a woman or his country. Good poem and thanks for sharing it.
