Autumn’s Sad Song

A colorful season for sure

But nature is going to sleep

The days are growing shorter

And it’s getting much colder

Soon the birds will pack up and leave

The winds will take the leaves from the trees

The grass beneath my feet

Won’t be green anymore

There will be many changes

And even if those colorful leaves

Are always a sight to see

I sure wish that summer could last a bit longer

I see the changes beginning already

It feels like it’s much too soon

The rain comes more often

And each raindrop is like a sad tear falling

Less and less I hear the bird songs outside my window

The days have more gray in them

And I know that soon

I’ll be seeing flocks of birds flying away

There are times

When this ritual repeats each autumn

That I’d like to spread my arms

And fly along with birds in the skies

Just perhaps to drift along

On a white cloud of fluff

To look down

And see the world from a bird’s point of view

So when those first leaves

Come dancing by me in the wind

I’ll look up at the sky

And wave my farewells

Knowing that no matter

How sad this makes me

There will be colorful beauty all around

And autumn will bring new joys

I find the impending Autumn to be very sad. The end of another summer, with all its promises of lazy days, fun, vacations and family time. And before you can blink, there is autumn, just waiting to descend on us. But you are right, once it's here, it has it's own special "gifts." Beautiful poem you have written.

A nice reflective work about the joys and sadness brought on by the coming of Autumn. Thank you for sharing these nice thoughts.

The one thing I really miss when I spend a long spell in warmer climates, is the changing of the seasons. Each with it's own special beauty and moods. You really captured the feel of Autumn here, beautifully done, love the music.

Autumn may well be my favorite season and you captured it beautifully. I am spreading my arms and embracing it all as it approaches. Great hub my friend.

Finally, a relief from the heat! The absolute best time of the year... and we're still in 90+ degree temperatures this week in Ky. You're poem beautifully depicts what I so desire to appear. And, I haven't heard from Chris DeBurgh since the 80's and his song "Don't Pay The Ferryman". Great Job!

What a beautiful poem to the oncoming season changes. It seems like we were all just writing about spring with all the flowers blooming, and I love seeing all the beautiful photos you share of where you live. It is like a paradise for sure. I love all the seasons, as they are bring something different, wonderful and beautiful to see. When my son was little and all the leaves had fallen, but were still very colorful, after we had raked the yard and the leaves were gone, he got so mad at us. I was so surprised but he told me that our yard looked "cool" with the leaves covering the ground. Then I had wished I had just left them there. Beautiful poem. Voted Way Up In His Love, Faith Reaper

The days are indeed getting shorter. I appreciate your words, but do look forward to fall with the joys it does bring.

I have seen the geese already in great number here, but I don't think they are migrating yet. Unless they know something we don't.

What a wonderful poem celebrating Autumn - the thing that strikes me is how you speak of birds taking flight to migrate South. That's something that doesn't happen here in Australia. I guess the weather is consistent all year round with no snow in winter so birds remain in their usual bush habitat.

My favourite lines are:

Soon the birds will pack up and leave

The winds will take the leaves from the trees...

Good write and voted awesome. Cheers.

Great poem! I love fall, I wrote a poem about it too but putting it in my book. I just wish fall lasted longer, it just is getting good when puff it's gone! I agree with Nell, winter is what I dread.

Thank you for this. Summer was our favorite season. It must be so for many people. That's why it seemed that autumn had so many dances, To take our minds off of it.

I love the Fall! It is such a colorful season. I have noticed here that the dogwood tree's leaves are the first to turn. The leaves of the Forsythia are next with a lovely deep purple. Fantastic Hub!

So glad you enjoyed this Faith. I can imagine how your son loved to go through the leaves. I always loved to jump right into those huge piles of raked up leaves which of course got them all over the place again. Thanks for the vote and God bless.

Hi, what a beautiful tribute to fall! You write so well, I can just see the golden colors on the trees around me, in spite of the fact that we are going into summer! I like fall, especially in the rural areas around Concepcion, you get some beautiful scenery. Voted up, awesome and beautiful. Have a good day!

Oh, Rasma - i so agree - it is FAR too soon! While the colors are beautiful - to me - they are representative of the death of my most beloved season - and seeing the 'change' just makes me sad...As always your words and your photos are gorgeous!

Gypsy, living in Southeast Texas, I had forgotten about the seasons. I used to live in Nebraska, and I remember the turning of the leaves and the grass turning brown. I knew winter was on the way. I love the line "And each raindrop is like a sad tear falling."

Well done and voted up. Thanks for the memories and I don't mean sad ones. I miss the seasons sometimes. Everything stays green all year down here and we seldom get snow. When we do, it's gone the next day or the day after that.

So glad you enjoyed this Ann. I have often wondered what it's like to live where there are no season changes. Have always lived through all four seasons.

Beautifully written sadness amidst the beauty of autumn's demise. And yet it does bring its joys too...One of the most sad and haunting sounds is that of geese flying south for the winter...like your picture. Your video music was hauntingly lovely too - I have never heard the song before.

Gypsy Rose Lee profile image

Gypsy Rose Lee 4 years ago from Riga, Latvia Author

So glad you enjoyed my autumn good-byes. Yes, frogyfish it is a lovely but sad time and you are right about the sounds of the geese. We just recently had a whole cackle I believe you say going overhead and the sounds seemed to echo. Chris de Burgh has many unique and different songs. You can find them on YouTube.
