Bareback Appaloosa's and Soldier Boys......

short story......

Quentin had spotted the rider in the distance knowing , its an Indian for sure . But the rider was alone and seemed set in his direction . He seemed to be riding slowly as if he had no where he had to be but just where he was right now. Yet as the other rider approached in the distance he seemed to grow a little straighter in stature on his appaloosa. Yes it was an native for sure , and he looked Cheyenne by his riding habits and dress. He casually brushed the dust from his new blue uniform front and adjusted his holster and hat . He was reasonably sure that there was no danger and yet , that he should still be vigilant.

Longhorse was sure it was a blue coat now that he was close enough to see him there , he wasn't a very good rider though , why did these soldiers ride with those saddles anyway ? He remembered back during the conflicts , he had come into possesion of one of them and found them so uncomfortable and backbreaking that he had left it there with the dead soldiers . But this soldier looked different from those he had seen before , this one looked like a young boy , and yet there was something strange about his eyes. As he closed in on the soldier he raised his hand to shoulder level to show that he was now a man of peace . Perhaps there would be no problem as the soldier rides alone .

Quentin pulled up and sidled to his right as the Indian approached slowly , as he unsnapped his holster just to be sure , and with one hand on the reigns and his other at the stock of his winchester he waited ! He thought better of speaking just yet , might as well see what happens .' My God he's a big man , he must be six feet tall ' , and then for just one brief moment he felt a string of fear go up his spine . but this wasn't the first time he had seen them up close now was it!

Longhorse felt strong today , as he closed in on the boy soldier he though of the old days before the peace papers were etched upon he would have been an easy one to defeat . He slowed his appaloosa and moving to the right he slowed further and walked completely around the soldier before stopping and swinging his mount straightening face to face with the soldier but just a few yards away before stopping , he noticed the soldier was covered in trail dust and that his stature was smaller than his ......yet there was a silent strength about him too as there eyes searched each others he wondered , he is small but has the look of power about him and then ...........no I will not try to over power this soldier . There is something about him that just wasn't right .

Just then the native spoke .........
"Today I will only take you're rifle to allow you to pass this place that is our peoples land" Thier eyes locking , and as real time moved away from them to allow destiny to play its hand out there was only silence in return .........the feathers in his hair moved slightly in the praire breezes , as the appy moved his head up and down once in boredom , And he waited ..............
But there was no reply.
" Do you not speak , soldier boy ?" and he smiled a wicked smile .....
But the soldier did not move nor speak .
Longhorse began to feel anger rising inside , at least the soldier should show some response?
" Did you think you could just ride across my lands without any thought of what it might cost ?"
And again there was only silence .
Longhorse now was becoming irritated by this soldier boys silence . And decided .......no , not yet , I will not provoke .
Instantly he wheeled his appaloosa about and before the soldier boy could move he whirled once around him and raised his hand to the sky above in a display of throwing a spear he threw his arm towards the soldier to give him the message!............
The dust rose around them all and the horses both fidgeted in steps while staying in place , Longhorse now understood ..........this is no boy ! He shows no fear at all ! .........And once more circles the soldier , but it was then that he noticed , there were blood stains on the coat . Old blood , now gone black . and the soldiers hands were scarred across the tops as if he had been ..........perhaps in many battles. He also saw the hand pistol now , he hadn't seen before , and it was already in the solldiers hand although he held it down at the inside of his upper leg.

Quentin was not afraid at all he knew something that the Native did not ! No......he could tell it hadn't shown yet , Wait ...........wait .......The big man had almost made him angry enough to kill him , but now .......a slow and lifting realization came over him . Yes , this was to be the end , this day it will all end and inside something broke and began to flush through his veins like an elixir .........today the journey ends . No ,ore waring , no longer to ride for weeks on end , no more killing and watching as the others danced and destroyed at will ! ......Slowly he reached his hand to his face and wiped away a weeks worth of trail dust ...........and spit the grime and dirt to his side.

Longhorse could not believe his eye's this soldier boy has stood firm for every move that he had made, he only sat in his saddle as if he were ready to die ! Or perhaps not..........maybe the soldier boy was much stronger than he had given him credit for ! No this soldier blue was different ........He had a feeling this wasn't going to end well and began to withdraw to a position to fight him , he drew the bone handled knife from his sheath and waved his arm to show the danger , Longhorse was ready to die or ready to kill one or the other. and just as he exploded into action his appaloosa rammed into the soldiers horse and he slashed out at the soldiers arm with one quick slice and saw the blue coat open and the blood begin to stain the sleeve. But Longhorse could not believe that the soldier didn't even move .

Quentin only pulled the reigns to steady his mount , his horse stilled immediately as all battle trained horses will do . And as the big Indian came around to his front once again he thought , Am I going to die today ?, Cannot this man before me see that I am done with war? He knew now that he would have to come to terms with this man before him , perhaps he doesn't recognise that I am not going to fight him and niether am I going to give him anything for passage , But as Quentin reached up and removed his hat and drew the sleeve of his bloodied arm over his face to remove the trail dust from his face he saw a change come over the native warrior before him , and as the blood drained from the older Natives face , Quentin spoke his first words ..........
" Are you going to kill the man before you now or wait until we get home my Father "........

This is very deep and interesting. Neither one of them want to kill the other and yet they go through the forms because they do not understand the other's culture.
