While Contemplating Life, the Universe & Everything

The bathroom is an interesting place. It is a place we go to escape and to just let it all out. Well, while dealing with the consequences of a 15 day juice fast/cleanse, I had this thought come to mind, "Why doesn't someone create a reading list of classic books that is themed for the bathroom?"

You see, I grew up in a house were the bathroom was a place of reflection as well as for daily business. Maybe it was because my dad kept a small library in his bathroom. Maybe it was because it was the only door in the house that I could lock to escape the mad house that is 6 siblings and 2 parents. Or maybe it is because some part of all of us realizes there is something therapeutic about dropping the worlds load and a load at the same time. Either way, I feel this reading list may provide not only a momentary laugh, but perhaps a desire to deepen your knowledge and understanding of literature that has shaped our society for better or for worse.

The List:

Great Expectations

The River Runs Through It

Gone with the Wind

The Red Badge of Courage

Crime & Punishment

Bleak House

The Odyssey

Far From the Maddening Crowd

The Hunchback of Notre-Dame

Les Misérables

The Turn of the Screw

The Call of the Wild

Moby Dick

Frankenstein

Black Beauty

The Tempest

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde

Hard Times

Comedy of Errors

All's Well that Ends Well

Much Ado About Nothing

The Imortance of Being Ernest

Utopia

I think reading on the can is...

  • therapeutic.
  • relaxing.
  • frustrating.
  • nasty.
  • something I never thought to do.

By no means is this list complete. This is just a list of books my wife and I came up with in 10 minutes. Please be sure to keep the titles of the books thematically appropriate. Thanks.

I suggest THE GREAT AMERICAN BATHROOM BOOK, Volumes 1 and 2, by Steven Anderson. The set gives two-page summaries of many great books, fiction and nonfiction.

Clever, funny as all get out, true to life for so many of us, a great Hub. I would suggest anything by the following authors, Stephen Jay Gould (a brilliant scientist who writes for non-scientists), C.S. Lewis, George Will, Oliver Sachs, Isaac Asimov, Gary Wills, Carl Sagan, Naomi Wolf, George Mosse, and David Brooks. There are others of course, but those come immediately to mind. :)
