Beneath frozen rivers ....

Untold histories lie frozen in slow time
as below the ice a river still flows and
speaks in
the mysteries of natures
many tongues
And yet I wonder why no one else is
out here listening

Mile after walking mile one dog builds
clumps of snow in the golden hair
of his legs
And yet to stop him I would not
they are in their eternal element
and I far removed from
mine

As they stop occasionally and
raise their noses to
the falling snow I wonder what mysteries
lie on the molecules
of frozen air
What do they know that
I do not ?

An age old river beneath fresh blue ice
broken only interruptedly by
black openings of rushing
water Too cold to
freeze
On its banks lies an old
stone foundation
some relic from the
old ways
The old lives that mattered once
and now lie forgotten

My imagination is haunted by images of
a cabin here by this river
or there on a rise beside
old dirt path perhaps in
that dark shaded area beneath
the pines between the river
and road but always
the river

Escapism shares it's fantasic images sparingly
yet I always see them
whether offered or not
Such is the curse of an isolationist
by soul
by nature
by need

Beautiful poem, and something I can relate to in the frigid months of Maine.

Good description, the river tends to speak !! Lovely, and dog holds on to the things he adores. Good parallelism brought out by the path and the dirt beneath the trees. If you had the time you could have taken it a step further. Good work Ahorseback.

This is a beautiful poem..... Vivid discription of the surrounding along with the poet's emotional experience! Touching point, choosing to be alone.....

Voting up and awesome!

Gave ya the perfect score here my man! I'm a very social person but being an only child, I treasure and must have my time alone. I insist on having a lot of it, and I think about things like this. Can't put it into beautiful words like this though!

There certainly is. I was born in California and still cannot imagine a more peaceful silence than that of a Maine winter's night with the snow falling.

Love this, the stillness and quiet with nothing to distract and all the time in the world to just reflect.

Probably for at least as long as my kids are in school. Once they are off on their own, we want to buy an RV and roam the country. But my son is 16 months old, so I have a while = ) Its okay, I could spend every summer on the shores of Maine's lakes.

That you are and i love listening to your thoughts/questions. I am a lot like that. I never pass an old house or any old relic that i don't think about what was and what happened...Cheers...

Howdy ahorseback - You know, I was thinking how nice it was to hang out where good poets are to be found, and then a friend of our shared another great poem from you. You know what they say? Yes. Good things happen if you open up your eyes to spot them.
